Central Transport Airport, however, with a cargo hub. Entrepreneurs have been campaigning for this

The Central Communication Port (CPK) project will undergo modifications to include the construction of a cargo hub – Cargo City – as part of a mega airport between Warsaw and Łódź. This is a decision sought by numerous supporters of the investment and entrepreneurs, pointing to the need to strengthen Poland’s position in the air freight market.

Cargo City as an integral part of CPK

The new CPK Multi-Year Programme for 2024-2032 includes the construction of a cargo city. According to the company, this project is of key importance for the diversification of airport revenues, which currently amount to around 40% of revenues at major airports worldwide. Agnieszka Stefańska-Krasowska, a spokeswoman for CPK, emphasises that the investment fits in with the assumptions of sustainable development of the region and enables the realisation of logistics goals on a supra-regional scale. The project aims to create a modern infrastructure to ensure the handling, storage and distribution of air cargo.

The two pillars of the development: Cargo City Core and Cargo City

Work on the project has been divided into two key elements. Cargo City Core will focus on the infrastructure directly on the tarmac, allowing for optimal air cargo handling. Cargo City will encompass the logistics and industrial zones around the airport. These areas are expected to contribute to the economic activation of the region through the creation of distribution centres, warehouses, production facilities and Build-to-Suit (BTS) infrastructure.

Transport at CPK

The project envisages the full integration of air, rail and road transport. This approach will ensure a balanced freight transport model in central Poland and on a national scale. The investment’s location in the vicinity of the Warsaw and Łódź agglomerations, along the A2 motorway and the planned Warsaw Agglomeration Ring Road (OAW), is conducive to the dynamic development of the warehouse sector.

Cooperation with PLL LOT

The Central Communication Port intends to cooperate closely with PLL LOT, which is expected to play a key role in air freight services. LOT, as the national carrier, although it does not have dedicated freighters, is developing belly cargo services. The cooperation aims to exploit the potential of the new connections and cargo hub infrastructure.

Schedule and financing of Cargo City

Work on the cargo hub includes conceptual, preparatory and design phases, which will be completed by 2032. The target financing model for the project, including the use of special purpose vehicles and the raising of external funds, is currently under study.

The Cargo City project is a key element in the development of the Central Transport Port, supporting both the economy of the region and the country as a whole. Thanks to the integration of various branches of transport and cooperation with PLL LOT, Poland has the opportunity to become an important player in the air freight market, responding to the growing needs of global logistics.
