The Chrobry Bridge in Poznań will be demolished and replaced by a new structure. As experts explain, this is due to its poor technical condition, which makes a standard renovation impossible. Municipal Investments has announced a tender for the selection of a contractor responsible for carrying out the construction work. The reconstruction process will take approximately three years and will be divided into phases to reduce inconvenience for residents. Work is scheduled to start in autumn this year. By that time, other road investments are to be completed, including a new viaduct on Golęcińska Street and repairs to the surface of the southern thread of Warszawska Street. It will also be crucial to make the flyovers on ul Lutycka and ul Hetmańska accessible, which will allow better organisation of traffic during the modernisation of the bridge.
Chrobrego Bridge in Poznań. Investment implementation stages.
In the first phase of the project, traffic will be redirected to the southern lane, while the northern part of the bridge will be closed and demolished. After the completion of this part of the works, there will be a change in organisation – traffic will move to the newly built northern lane and the southern part will be rebuilt. At the same time, additional elements of the investment will be implemented, such as improvements to the road infrastructure around the bridge. Once the modernisation is complete, drivers will still have two lanes in each direction to ensure smooth traffic flow.
Improving safety and infrastructure
The Chrobry Bridge is a key crossing, connecting the Old Town with Ostrow Tumski and Śródka. The structure was built in the 1960s and underwent a major renovation in 1989. The most recent technical expertise, carried out by specialists from the Poznań University of Technology, revealed numerous damages to the structure, including leaking insulation, lack of proper drainage and corrosion caused by leaks. The modernisation works are aimed at improving the load-bearing capacity of the facility and the safety of all users. As part of the investment, the approaches to the bridge and sections of Estkowskiego and Wyszyńskiego Streets will also be rebuilt. In addition, work is planned at the intersections with Chwaliszewo, Panny Marii and Wieżowa Streets. New pavements, cycle paths and pedestrian-cycle routes will also be created.
Facilities for public transport passengers, pedestrians and cyclists
The project also provides significant facilities for public transport passengers. A joint tram and bus stop will be created near the Cathedral to facilitate transfers. Buses will be able to run on the track, which will improve public transport. The stop will be equipped with information boards, a ticket machine and new shelters and benches. It will also be adapted to the needs of people with disabilities through the use of textured markings on the surface.
Pedestrians and cyclists will also be affected by the changes. The subway at the junction of Wyszyńskiego Street with Ostrów Tumski Street and Wieżowa Street will be removed. Instead, an above-ground pedestrian crossing with a separate cycle crossing will be created. Wide pavements and cycle paths are planned for the bridge, which will be connected to the existing infrastructure on Estkowskiego Street. In addition, cycle counters will be installed in the area of the intersection of Estkowskiego and Chwaliszewo Streets, and a pedestrian and cycle path will be created on Wyszyńskiego Street. Rest areas with benches, litter bins and bicycle racks are also planned.
Scope of additional works
The works will also include the modernisation of the road drainage, the installation of new street lighting and the reconstruction of the traffic lights. As part of the investment, an upgrade of the water supply system is also planned, as recommended by Aquanet. Thanks to these measures, Chrobry Bridge in Poznań will be demolished and rebuilt in a way that ensures safety and comfort for all users.
