Its design was prepared by architects from the broKat studio. Ciocho Cukrownia is located at 107 Gliwicka Street in Katowice. The interior was filled with furniture and decorative elements that allude to sweet treats.
This is the second project carried out by the broKat studio for a couple of investors. Ewelina and Mateusz of Tortowy Cioch bake cakes, pastries, biscuits and macarons. The first project involved the design of the patisserie studio itself. The next one is for the Ciocho Cake Shop.
The designers had specific assumptions. The interior was to refer to the brand’s corporate identity, so the main colours were to be pink, blue and white, and the atmosphere of the premises was to be cosy, warm, sweet and full of ideas.
The “Ciocho Cukrownia” premises are located on the ground floor, in an old renovated building, where the basic building material is brick. It was therefore natural for the project to use this raw material in the interior design.
Functional layout
The premises in which the patisserie operates have an irregular, oblong shape. The architects decided to divide the space into two parts. The first, at the front, accessible from the street, with large windows on the façade, has been designed as a consumption room and bar – all accessible to customers. The second, technical part, was placed at the back of the premises, where the two kitchens and all the required back-up facilities for the patisserie were located.
Ciocho Cukrownia and sweet interior
The lampery, as the main decorative element, refers to the cross-section of the cake – the layers of creams and cakes. It was made of different coloured vertical tiles in the colours of the corporate identity, which surround the entire consumption room including the bar. Above the panelling, the designers left the original brick found in the premises. The front of the bar was made of rough hollow blocks painted white, resembling a compacted structure made of sugar cubes. The backs of the benches, on the other hand, were designed to resemble two bite-size biscuits, which Ewelina refers to as ‘cunts’.
An original idea was to place a carousel in the interior, which allows one to be transported back to childhood for a moment. The carrousel was designed in blue and pink, consistent with the rest of the arrangement. The piece of furniture functions as a swing, whose seats allude to the shape of macarons – sweet pastries that are part of Ewelina’s offer. The installation has been mounted close to the shop window to attract the attention of passers-by and invite them in.
Sparkle in a patisserie
Lighting plays a key role in the interior design. The entire ceiling, including the installations, was painted blue. On this background, delicate lamps were hung, resembling dangling Christmas diamonds. Small crystals were mounted between the lights to reflect and refract the light, creating a unique atmosphere. The idea for this type of lighting came from the investor, and we added luminous garlands to warm up the interior. As aresult, an unusual light composition was created on the raw, wooden ceiling, ” describe the authors of the project.
Details are important in the space. The tabletop was made of ground-up pieces of wood and the floor was tiled in a terrazzo pattern, but in colours referring to the corporate identity.
In the bathroom, instead of a standard mirror, three walls were lined with mirror fragments, creating an original surface structure. Above the whole, we placed an illuminated inscription made of leds, ‘For the love of sugar’ – a slogan often used by the investor, which has become her trademark.
When designing the interior, we did not forget the front elevation of the building either. Three-dimensional metal letters were installed on it, forming the inscription ‘Ciocho Cukrownia’. Theletters were filled with dozens of light bulbs, creating a striking signboard that illuminates the façade of the renovated building after dark,” concludethe architects.
