Creative loft design. Hidden room and spiral staircase

Clever and skilful arrangement of space in the attic requires particular imagination. Limited height, sloping ceilings and unusual wall layouts make the interiors of this type of premises a challenge, but at the same time open up scope for original and surprising solutions. The attic can become a comfortable place, full of light and creatively planned corners. An example of this is the Ivens flat in Lisbon, which was given a completely new look by the X Atelier studio.

The designers approached the renovation with a view to making maximum use of the available volume. The flat is on two levels, and the use of overlapping spaces allowed zones of different character to be created. The living area was planned as open and flexible, responding to the different needs of the owners. It is a place for work, leisure and meetings, which, thanks to a neutral colour scheme dominated by white and colourful accents, acquires lightness. The rather subdued interiors of the premises are enlivened by colourful tiles, furniture upholstery and distinctive accessories. Natural wood also plays an important role in the floors, furniture and the construction of the second staircase.

Ivens

One of the most characteristic elements of the design is the spiral staircase. Its sculptural form makes it not only communicative, but also decorative, serving as the focal point of the entire flat. The optimisation of space was possible thanks to a clever design trick of lowering the technical rooms on the first level, which made better use of the mezzanine area.

The designers also took care to create informal zones that add clarity to the flat and are the perfect place for relaxation and intimacy. The children’s room, hidden behind a wardrobe door, is an example of an out-of-the-box approach to design that brings an element of surprise to the interior. The terrace overlooking the historic part of Lisbon completes the look, giving the residents additional space to relax outdoors.

The Ivens flat has been approached in a bold and creative way, which has made it possible to turn a somewhat troublesome attic into a functional, comfortable and lively space. As you can see, even unusual circumstances can become an asset if you treat them as an inspiration rather than a constraint.
