The Warsaw City Roads Authority has announced the selection of a contractor for the project to rebuild the Zeslańców Syberyjskich roundabout. Road engineers admit that the traffic solutions in force there deviate from modern standards and that pedestrian and cyclist crossings should be created on the surface.
The last reconstruction of the intersection at the junction of Wola and Ochota took place more than 20 years ago. At that time, a three-level road junction was built according to the standards of the time. Pedestrian crossings and bicycle crossings were placed underground.
The carriageway on the south side is crossed at ground level, and then the footpath and cycleway at a sharp angle go below the surface and end in steps. Aneast-west pedestrian and cycle connection on the north side of the roundabout is also completely missing, reports the Warsaw City Roads Authority.
In addition, the Zesłańców Syberyjskich roundabout has no solutions to make it easier for people with disabilities to get around the area. Nowadays, infrastructure projects being developed in the city are carried out taking into account other standards. That is why the roadworkers have announced the removal of the existing subways and their replacement with above-ground ones. Cycle crossings will be similarly routed. During the works, the traffic lights will be redesigned and the existing cycle paths will be rebuilt. The paving will be removed and the surface will be asphalt. Pavements and bus stops will also be rebuilt.
Road engineers had already planned to rebuild the roundabout earlier, as part of the previous EU perspective and the ZIT WOF programme implemented in 2016-2019. However, the prices at that time exceeded the assumed budget. On the other hand, no company came forward in the tender for the project, which was announced in July 2023. This has now finally changed.
The tender to select the company that will design the new solutions was launched in January. One company came forward – Infra Centrum Doradztwa sp. z o.o. from Leszno. Its offer amounted to slightly more than PLN 781 thousand. This is over PLN 100 thousand less than ZDM planned to allocate for this purpose. The contract was signed at the end of May. Now Infra Centrum Doradztwa has 16 months to develop the redevelopment project.
