The announced residential buildings will not be built at the junction of Lema and Dabska streets in Krakow. The city has decided to designate the area as a park. This was the result of residents’ interventions, the reaction of the authorities and the consequences of the fact that a developer had cut down trees there without any permission. The arbitrariness has provoked strong opposition from the local community.
Developer cut down trees – consequences
At the beginning of July this year, local residents informed the Kraków authorities about the removal of trees on one of the plots of land near Lema Street earmarked for a development. Among them was a large, old poplar tree that had been a characteristic feature of the landscape in this part of the estate for years. The matter was quickly dealt with by the relevant services, including the Department of Environment, Climate and Air and the police. During meetings between the authorities and residents, a proposal was put forward to amend the local zoning plan and introduce public greenery at this location. The Mayor of Krakow Aleksander Miszalski announced at the time that such audacious illegal felling would not remain without consequences. He also stressed that the example of Lema and Dąbska Streets should serve as a warning to all investors planning similar activities.
New local plan for the “Dąbska” area
As he said, so he did. At the mayor’s request, a study was prepared on the merits of preparing a new local plan for the “Dąbska” area. The document indicated that the designation of the area for a park is in line with the Study of Conditions and Directions for Spatial Development of the city. City councillors therefore passed a resolution on 27 August starting work on the plan, the main aim of which is to create a park on this site and reverse the effects of the developer’s illegal actions. Until now, this area was covered by the ‘Lema – Dabski Pond’ plan and could have been used for housing. However, the Department of Architecture has confirmed that no planning application has been submitted. The amendment to the local plan is therefore intended to protect the plots from future development and to permanently allocate them for recreational purposes.
Developer cut down trees and incurred a fine
Mayor Aleksander Miszalski was adamant that no developer can count on the city’s acquiescence if they engage in practices involving arbitrary tree felling. He further stressed that Krakow will not allow private interests to take precedence over the well-being of residents and environmental protection.
