“Rooted in Blue” is a project that Anna Czarnota created at dawn, during the so-called blue hour, in the coastal town of Ölüdeniz in Turkey. The choice of location and time of day formed the foundation of a narrative about balance – between elegance and freedom, control and surrender – creating a space for photography rooted in authenticity. It is an editorial that focuses on the feeling of the moment and its natural harmony.
Anna Czarnota emphasises that the project was, from the outset, intended as a visual reflection. The light at sunrise, the soft colour palette and the tranquil atmosphere of Ölüdeniz served as tools for creating a mood that is felt rather than explicitly described. The model, wearing a white suit designed by Zofia Barszczkowska, was set against a natural landscape – between the sea and the sand – which allowed the delicacy of her silhouette to be combined with the distinctiveness of the design. This deliberate choice emphasised the idea of balance that defines the entire project.
Creative mindfulness
Although the photographer often works intuitively, location shoots require her to be meticulous. Preparations for ‘Rooted in Blue’ began long before the trip: analysing the light, scouting the location, planning the logistics and creating a mood board, which became the foundation of the entire concept. Every minute at dawn counts, which is why the shoot was scheduled almost hour by hour. Thanks to this, the shoot went smoothly.
I was keen to create an atmosphere of calm and harmony, which is why the lighting, styling and surroundings were chosen very intuitively, yet deliberately. This approach resonates with me, particularly today, when the fashion world is increasingly seeking authenticity and an emotional message. The model, wearing a white suit designed by Zofia Barszczkowska, embodies for me a combination of delicacy and strength. Set against a natural landscape – between the sea and the sand – she becomes part of that space, whilst at the same time emphasising the structure and character of the styling through her posture. “It’s a story about silence, mindfulness and being ‘here and now’ – something felt rather than explicitly told,” explains Anna Czarnota, describing the concept behind the photo shoot.
The photographer works with a group of artists whose sensibilities she knows well and whom she trusts. The stylist, make-up artist and other creatives have their own aesthetic language, and their work harmonises with the editorial concept. Czarnota emphasises that she gives them space, because it is precisely this shared sensibility that shapes the final result. The choice of model or designer is always a conscious one – it is meant to complement the story and give it character.
Authenticity
In a discussion about contemporary trends, Anna Czarnota highlights the growing need for authenticity. In a world dominated by technology and perfection, intentionality, imperfection and the human element are becoming increasingly valued. There is a noticeable shift towards flash photography, which creates strong chiaroscuro and a sense of immediacy, as well as a return to analogue grain. These are aesthetics that emphasise the organic nature of the image. At the same time, the author notes an overabundance of perfect, characterless productions and nostalgic references that have lost their freshness.
The author of the editorial is currently working on several parallel projects, combining fashion photography with travel. She collaborates with young designers, photographs SAPU final-year students, is reviving the ‘KOI’ exhibition, and is also developing a personal series dedicated to the female form in relation to nature. This is an area particularly close to her heart and one which – much like ‘Rooted in Blue’ – is based on mindfulness, simplicity and emotional expression.
