The European University has its campus in the heart of Valencia. The campus is a unique example of the meeting of historical heritage with modern architecture. Buildings from the 19th century are combined with new buildings, which were designed by the Ramón Esteve Estudio studio.
The focal point of the project is the former San Juan Bautista Asylum, a building built in 1873 in a neoclassical style. Thanks to its historical significance and exceptional architectural qualities, the building is a valuable heritage asset. Its strategic location, opposite the Institute of Modern Art of Valencia (IVAM) and its proximity to what was once the bed of the Turia River, give it an extra dimension – it becomes a bridge connecting the past to the present. The European campus project takes new life to the site, transforming the old structure into a modern 21st-century educational centre.
Heritage in modern form
During the comprehensive renovation, the architects focused on preserving the unique details that defined the original character of the building. Modern solutions were integrated into the historic structure while retaining elements such as the Noll mosaics, stone floors, chapel and cloisters. The result is a harmonious dialogue between the authentic materials of the past and modern design concepts. This ability to combine retro and modern elements only confirms how architecture can be a bridge between eras, enabling continuous development without losing the identity of a place.
The new campus has been designed with the needs of modern education in mind. The building is divided into two main sections: one with cloisters housing lecture theatres and offices, and the other containing a central block dedicated to communal spaces. The double façade of the lecture theatres – facing both the garden and the cloisters – provides an abundance of natural light and promotes a friendly working atmosphere. The cloisters not only serve a communicative function, but also become natural places for the integration of students and lecturers, which contributes to a dynamic and creative academic environment.
Harmonious dialogue between old and new
The construction of a new annex, located at the western end of the campus site, is also an integral part of the project. This new section, although an expression of modernity, is masterfully integrated into the existing complex. The architects have ensured consistency in material, colour and composition, creating a modern block that does not dominate the historic building, but complements it. The resulting space is proof that it is possible to combine innovative ideas with the historical context – without compromising either sphere.
Located in the heart of Valencia, the campus is a new reference point for an interdisciplinary approach to architecture and the restoration of historic buildings. Designed to accommodate almost 2,000 students, including a large international community, the building is not only aesthetically outstanding, but also functionally outstanding. The thoughtful organisation of the space is conducive to both intensive study and spontaneous encounters, enabling the exchange of experiences and ideas, which undoubtedly contributes to academic and cultural development.
This innovative campus concept is more than just the modernisation of a historic building – it is a testament to the firm conviction that the future of education is based on the synergy between the rich heritage of the past and the dynamic forms of contemporary design.
