Filled with design and art. The painter’s flat in Warsaw

It is a space where design meets art. The flat of painter Maja Bernaciak was designed by architect Mateusz Baumiller. The flat is located in a 19th-century building, and its original interior takes you on a pleasant journey through different aesthetics.

The flat is located in the annexe of a tenement house on Kopernika Street in Warsaw. Its area is 70 sq m. It is a building from 1890, the division of the rooms was dictated by the preserved stucco on the ceiling and the layout of the windows. Intervention was limited to making a few new penetrations and removing alterations made over the past few decades.

The ceiling stuccos in question required partial reparation and were only damaged in a few places. These stuccos were probably already created at the beginning of the 20th century.

The flat has a rectangular plan and windows on one side. This necessitated a functional layout – the rectangle was divided by walls so that each room had access to daylight.

When asked about the interior design, architect Mateusz Baumiller points to another important issue. The flat has a simple layout, but gives the impression of spaciousness. When you open the bedroom door, you can see all the windows. This visually enlarges the flat and makes each room merge with the next. The folding doors between the living room and bedroom are reminiscent of old architectural details and are undoubtedly a photogenic element.

The flat is filled with furniture and accessories from various years. Such a combination makes the interior closest to eclecticism. When designing the space, the architect tried to create a kind of background for the investor’s paintings. It is her art that plays a major role here. This effect was also achieved thanks to the white walls, which further brighten up the entire space.

The kitchen design is also impressive. Rounded sections can be seen in every element here. The curves refer to the historical character of the building.

The largest piece of furniture in the living room is the “Sity” sofa. This is a design from the 1980s that Antonio Citterio made for B&B Italia. The ‘Flock’ armchair and the ‘Serenissimo table’ designed by Lella & Massimo Vignelli are placed right next to it.
