The Forest of Remembrance in Łódź was created at the Szczecińska municipal cemetery at 28/30 Hodowlana St. The aim is to respond to the pro-ecological needs of local residents, as well as to reduce pollution or burial costs. Aesthetic considerations are also important.
The first Forest of Remembrance in Łódź is a separate, enclosed and wooded section of the cemetery. In the 360 m² mass grave, the burial sites will not be marked. There is, however, a special plaque commemorating those buried there. A pedestal in front of the fence has been prepared for flowers and candles.
Thanks to this measure, there will be no need for non-ecological coffins. Biodegradable urns will take their place. Instead of stone monuments – trees will grow at the burial site, which have much greater environmental benefits than a marble gravestone.
For the Forest of Remembrance, only a fee for burial in a biodegradable, eco-friendly urn is envisaged. There will be no service charge or reburial fee for 20 years. Burials in the Forest of Remembrance will be possible from 9 August. Detailed information is available at the cemetery office on Szczecińska Street.
It is worth mentioning that similar Memorial Forests already exist in other cities. Two such cemeteries have already been established in Poznan, which you can read about here: https://www.whitemad.pl/kolejny-las-pamieci-w-poznaniu-pochowki-w-biodegradowalnych-urnach/
