Flat in a modernist townhouse in Warsaw designed by NOI Studio.

A flat in a modernist tenement in Warsaw is a project that combines the elegance of the 1930s with a modern lifestyle. The authors of the arrangement, NOI Studio, created an interior where the past meets the present. It is a space where preserved architectural details harmonise with original solutions, and the whole creates a coherent and timeless character.

Investors’ individual expectations

The new owners of the property were clear about their needs from the outset. They wanted an interior dominated by black accents, natural wood and high-quality materials. The style was to be modern, but with a touch of classic. These guidelines became the foundation of the project and made it possible to create a space that corresponds to contemporary standards, while at the same time referring to the spirit of the tenement house.

Author’s made-to-measure furniture

One of the most distinctive elements of the arrangement is the furniture built-up specially created for this flat. A series of veneer cabinets with curved fronts gave the interior a soft and elegant feel. The cabinetry not only emphasised the plasticity of the space, but also introduced maximum functionality, giving every space a practical use.

Kitchen – the heart of a flat in a modernist townhouse

In the living area, the kitchen has become the focal point. Black matt fronts were juxtaposed with warm wood tones to create an elegant balance. Natural accessories such as stone, ceramics and textiles underline the timeless character of the interior. With these solutions, the kitchen not only has a utilitarian function, but also becomes the aesthetic centre of home life.

The bedroom as an oasis of calm

The bedroom design is based on a dark, atmospheric wall with decorative divisions. This forms the backdrop for the bed, which is finished in natural fabric. Neutral textiles, subtle lighting and minimalist decorations create an atmosphere conducive to relaxation. This gives the space an intimate and harmonious feel.

A study with an artistic touch

The flat is complemented by a study that maintains stylistic consistency with the rest of the interior. A wooden bookcase with open shelves makes it possible to display books and decorations, and the whole is complemented by prints and posters. This space promotes concentration while accentuating the residents’ individual style.

Detail from the 1930s – door and porthole

The original door from the 1930s remains a unique element of the flat, one of which is distinguished by its characteristic porthole with pea-glazed glass – a detail typical of modernist architecture. Preserving these elements gave the arrangement authenticity and highlighted the history of the place.

Modern bathrooms in a historic building

The bathrooms, finished with corset tiles, have only been refreshed. The furniture fittings and lighting were replaced, and the wood-like tiles were repainted black. This gave them a modern feel while remaining consistent with the overall flat.

Quote from the architect

“I was keen to create an interior that was consistent with the spirit of the townhouse, while also meeting contemporary expectations. Every detail – from the materials, to the functional solutions, to the hand-crafted built-ins – has been carefully considered to make the end result timeless and unique.”

A flat in a modernist tenement – the end result

The NOI Studio project proves that working with the existing architectural fabric can be inspiring and valuable. What is valuable has been preserved, while new elements have given the arrangement a contemporary dimension. The result is a flat that combines history with modernity, providing the occupants with comfort, aesthetics and a sense of uniqueness.
