The renovation of one of Sopot’s townhouses from the early 20th century is a project combining the preservation of the building’s historical character with modern functional solutions. The aim of the redevelopment was to transform the interiors, originally accommodating six separate units, into two flats, as well as to restore the former glory of the body of the building and the facades. The main two-storey flat in the building occupies the two upper floors and provides a space created for the investors, Kasia and Wojtek, and their two cats. On the ground floor, meanwhile, there is a guest apartment.
Two-storey townhouse flat
The two-storey main flat is a combination of modernity, functionality and cosiness, with numerous details referring to the original architecture of the building. Already upon entering the flat, the individual approach to interior design is noticeable. The spacious corridor is decorated with a green, custom-made wooden wardrobe. In addition to its storage function, it conceals cleverly hidden cat litter trays. Opposite the wardrobe is a console for small items and a bench. The corridor is complemented by a huge painting, which was Wojtek’s birthday present.
Sopot flat – living room with mezzanine
The living room is the focal point of the living area, impressing with an open mezzanine that emphasises the impressive dimensions of the interior. A staircase with an oak finish leads to it, where there is a reading corner and a terrace providing privacy and tranquillity. It is the ideal place to relax surrounded by greenery. A characteristic element of the spacious living room is the chimney finished with geometric stucco in a shade of dirty pink, reaching two storeys. Its lower part is finished in stone, which adds to the overall elegance. The living room also features a bookcase that doubles as a library and a playground for the cats. Openings in the shelves allow the pets to play freely. A small work desk has been placed next to the bookcase, and the whole is complemented by a comfortable sofa and a TV area.
Oak accents in the kitchen and dining area
The kitchen and dining area form one space, where the main accent is an oak table surrounded by black chairs. The kitchen has also been fitted with an oak built-in with a graphite worktop and stylised appliances by SMEG. Ceramic flooring in stars by Peronda adds a unique touch to the interior. The dining area is separated from the kitchen by a breakfast bar with hockers, and the whole is complemented by a bay window with large windows and a built-in bench – the perfect place for a moment of reflection overlooking the surroundings.
Bedroom with private bathroom
The bedroom is dominated by an oak bed with a cognac leather headboard, brick walls and green accents that appear in almost all the rooms. The space is complemented by a dressing room and a private bathroom hidden behind sliding doors, with starburst flooring and stone walls, where you’ll also find a free-standing bathtub. Black accessories, such as fittings and a symmetrical mirror, give the interior a modern feel.
Renovation of the townhouse and restoration of historical details
The renovation also included the preservation of the building’s original elements in the common areas, such as the stained-glass windows, the stylised handrails and the wooden staircase. Lighting in the form of plafonds and details, such as the door carpentry, emphasise the historic character of the building. Every detail has been carefully restored to preserve the spirit of yesteryear.
