Flat in an Art Nouveau townhouse in Bydgoszcz. It is beautiful!

A flat in an Art Nouveau tenement in Bydgoszcz is an example of a harmonious combination of the architectural context with the residents’ individual lifestyle. The author of the project is Aleksandra Przybyła – architect, founder of MURU Studio and lecturer at the Academy of Fine Arts in Wrocław. For the couple running the tattoo studio, she created an interior that, like their work, exudes craftsmanship, a sense of detail and personal character.

New functional layout and second life of Art Nouveau details

The metamorphosis of the interior began with a thoughtful reconstruction of the flat’s layout. Demolition of walls resulted in an open, multi-layered living space in which functional zones flow seamlessly into each other. Historic elements, such as the original herringbone parquet floors and double doors, were preserved and renovated. The door, painted a subtle blue and glazed with fluted glass, became one of the most important accents of the arrangement.

Kitchen and living room – the heart of a flat in an Art Nouveau townhouse in Bydgoszcz

The central part of the project is an open living area comprising a kitchen with an island, a dining area and a seating area. Warm burgundy furnishings, light wall panelling, black accents and distinctive terrazzo create a coherent composition of colour and material. The kitchen island made of solid wood with traditional carpentry joints is an example of master craftsmanship, and the built-in shelves integrated into the built-ins add functionality to the interior.

Thoughtful transitions and interior rhythm

Right from the threshold of the flat, the user enters a clearly organised space. The entrance area is kept in a more graphic aesthetic: black walls, vertical corrugations and a rounded mirror introduce rhythm and order, without being too visually dominant.

The intimate work zone and the domestic everyday life

The bay window has been adapted into a quiet workspace. The built-in seating, veneered desk and soft fabrics create a comfortable nook for concentration. Right next to it is the living room with a light sofa, a minimalist RTV cabinet and plants that complete the whole with a natural touch.

Contrasting combinations in the bedroom and bathroom

The bedroom is a play of contrasts – black and white juxtaposed with large, round mirrors create a modern, yet orderly space. The bathroom, on the other hand, catches the eye with pink matt tiles, black cabinetry and distinctive ceramics. This is complemented by white terrazzo, which ties all the interiors of the designed flat together.

Aleksandra Przybyła and MURU Studio philosophy

Aleksandra Przybyła is a designer with a unique sensitivity to cultural and architectural context. Her MURU studio specialises in the design of residential interiors and public spaces – from offices to restaurants and hotels. In the case of this flat, she proved that a flat in an Art Nouveau tenement in Bydgoszcz can be both contemporary and true to its history.

A flat that tells a story

This project is not just a collection of stylish elements. It is a story about everyday life, rooted in a place with soul. Thanks to a consistent language of materials, a well thought-out functional structure and attention to light, texture and rhythm – a timeless interior has been created that delights with subtlety and depth.
