The flat is located in Warsaw’s Stary Mokotow district, in a low-rise building from the 1990s. Despite space limitations, the architects from the estimental studio have managed to create an atmospheric space whose aesthetic refers to the mid-century modern style.
The interior was designed by Klaudia Kwiatkowska-Wawruch and Justyna Kowalska. The architects had to create a functional interior for a family of four. Thanks to the changes made to the functional layout, it was possible to adapt the flat to the needs of the occupants, who wanted not only to create a comfortable area for relaxation, but also for work.
The main objective was to create a functional, yet atmospheric space, referring to the mid-century aesthetic. In arranging the interior, we avoided modern, minimalist solutions, instead opting for details and materials that introduce warmth and character, ” says Justyna Kowalska.
The flat underwent a thorough metamorphosis. One of the biggest changes was the relocation of the kitchen. The previous kitchen was turned into a children’s room and the new kitchen was combined with the living room. In addition, the architects managed to create two bright fully independent offices for remote working from one room.
We designed a glazed, sliding wall between the offices, which acts as an acoustic barrier when needed, while also providing daylight in the office away from the window. We wanted both offices to provide the same comfort of work, hence the possibility of extending the wall to provide access to fresh air,” adds Klaudia Kwiatkowska-Wawruch.
Thanks to the changes, the residents gained a larger bathroom. A comfortable laundry room was separated in it. The extension of the room allowed for better management of the entire area. In order to avoid sharp lines and add harmony to the interior, the wall on the kitchen and living room side was finished with an arch. This made the transition between the living areas smoother and softer visually.
An interesting accent is the use of doors with fanlights, which allowed gentle natural light to enter the long corridor. The whole composition is completed with a long patterned carpet, which has become a characteristic element decorating the entire interior.
The interior is dominated by natural materials, which make the space feel cosy and warm. The dominant wood appears in the form of flooring, veneered fronts and wooden furniture, complemented by rattan details, plaits, patterned carpets and upholstered elements. This combination gives the space a sense of character.
Soft lighting and the introduction of curves in the form of curved walls and furniture add softness and harmony to the interior. The use of these shapes visually warms up the space, giving it a more dynamic and coherent appearance.
The kitchen cabinetry is also an interesting solution. The column with integrated fridge and oven is designed so that it does not reach the ceiling. As a result, light shines freely through the upper part of the fitting, which optically relieves the kitchen space and gives it a lighter appearance.
The result of the renovation is a functional flat that perfectly combines mid-century style aesthetics with modern comfort. Natural materials, thoughtful room layout and attention to detail have made the space bright, comfortable and resident-friendly. Particularly noteworthy are the flexible division of the cabinets, the visually light kitchen design and the elements alluding to classical interiors, which give the flat a unique character. In addition, practical solutions such as a separate laundry room in the enlarged bathroom or rounded walls and passageways have been used.
