Flat in the Vienna House in Poznań. Here every detail counted!

In the very centre of Poznań, at the junction of Podgórna and Szkolna Streets, the Vienna House has been reconstructed – a building that restores the city’s former elegance while opening it up to modernity (we wrote about it HERE). Behind the façade, faithfully recreated with attention to detail, is a new structure in which history has become the starting point for creating a modern, functional and light-filled space. One of the flats in this building is a realisation by the JURGA Design studio, led by Honorata Jurga, who does not reconstruct the past, but engages in a creative dialogue with it.

The tenement was created in close cooperation with the Municipal Conservator of Monuments. The architects restored its original proportions, reconstructed the oriel window topped with a cupola, balconies and stucco details, and built the interior from scratch, adapting it to contemporary technical and energy requirements. The result is a building that combines the old character of Poznań with the rhythm of today’s city – dynamic, full of contrasts and open to change.

The flat designed by JURGA Design is a reinterpretation of the classics. The interior tells a story of emotion, light and rhythm, avoiding predictability and neutrality. The stucco present on the walls and ceilings is not a decoration here, but a tool to organise the space and introduce rhythm. Soft lines, mouldings and reliefs become a sculptural gesture that gives the interior a character of contemporary elegance.

The most striking accent of the design is the bathroom – small, but with a theatrical expression. Walls in a shade of deep burgundy juxtaposed with marble tiles and gold fittings create an intimate setting in which light and reflections build an intense, sensual atmosphere. In the rest of the suite, the energy of the colours balances out with the harmony of the materials: anthracite fittings, beige surfaces and a wooden floor laid in a classic herringbone pattern provide a calm backdrop for the bold burgundy accents.

Honorata Jurga – JURGA Design

The flat overlooks the centre of Poznań – a space where the city’s history merges with its contemporary rhythm. Jurga Design exploits this tension to create an interior that does not pretend to be old, but is able to draw from it. “It was not about reconstruction. It was about dialogue – about creating a space that breathes history but speaks the language of the present,” emphasises Honorata Jurga.

The Vienna Tenement thus becomes more than just a renovated building. It is a symbol of urban memory and new thinking about heritage, and the flat designed by JURGA Design shows that emotion, courage and light can be a contemporary form of elegance.
