At Garnizon in Gdańsk, a development designed with everyday comfort in mind, an 80-square-metre flat has been created, designed by Magdalena Woynarowska of Sota Studio. It is a space for a young family, where functionality meets a natural, tranquil aesthetic.
The starting point was the need to reorganise an unfavourable functional layout. The designer reconfigured the area comprising two bedrooms and a large bathroom, thereby providing the owners with the comfort that was lacking in the original plan. The new layout has made it possible to clearly separate the living area from the private quarters, whilst maintaining a fluid flow between spaces and a consistent use of materials.
Inspiration from the building’s architecture
One of the first design inspirations was the pattern of the balustrade on the staircase in the communal area. This motif was carried into the interior in the form of muntins crossing the mirror panel in the hall. This subtle touch serves as a visual link between the flat and the building’s architecture, introducing this distinctive element into the space.
Functional layout
The flat is organised around two zones. The living area comprises a kitchenette, a home office and a small bathroom – an active space conducive to daily chores and remote working. The private area comprises two bedrooms and a large bathroom accessible directly from the master bedroom. This layout ensures comfort of use and allows the household members to go about their days simultaneously without disturbing one another.
A light colour palette with wooden accents
The whole interior is kept in natural, light shades of beige and white, which create a calm backdrop for the distinctive wooden veneer. It is this veneer that lends the interior depth and creates a sense of warmth, whilst also serving to bring order to the composition. The designer has also introduced a colour twist – a subtle contrast that enlivens the space without overwhelming it.
Contrast in the details
The most striking accents are found in materials with a bold pattern. Delicate shades of red and brown in the veining adorning the kitchen worktops and the bathroom wall add character to the interior. These are carefully chosen elements that reinforce the flat’s identity whilst remaining in harmony with the natural backdrop.
The result is a well-thought-out, functional and elegant space – a home that meets the needs of a modern family, whilst remaining true to the aesthetic of the place where it was created.
