The Warsaw-based architectural practice Foroom has been nominated for the Mayor of Warsaw’s Architecture Award in the Public Utility Architecture category. The nominated project, the Warsaw Energy Plant, which operates in accordance with Best Available Technology (BAT) standards, stands out not only for its scale but also for its comprehensive approach to environmental protection, energy efficiency and public education.
The Warsaw Energy Plant, one of the most technologically and architecturally advanced infrastructure facilities in Europe, has been shortlisted for the Mayor of Warsaw’s Architecture Award. The architectural design for this unique project, carried out for the Municipal Wastewater Treatment Company in the Capital City of Warsaw, was created by the Foroom studio.
Located at 2 Zabraniecka Street in Targówek, the Warsaw Energy Plant is a key element in the transformation of the city’s waste management system. It is one of the largest and most modern municipal waste thermal treatment facilities in Europe, operating in accordance with Best Available Technology (BAT) standards. Annually, the plant will process between 260,000 and 300,000 tonnes of municipal waste, converting it into electricity and heat produced via high-efficiency combined heat and power generation for tens of thousands of households in Warsaw.
“The Warsaw Energy Plant is one of the most important and demanding projects in our studio’s history. It is a project in which the architecture had to meet the highest technological and environmental standards, whilst at the same time creating a facility that is open to residents and integrated into the urban fabric. We have succeeded in combining advanced engineering solutions with high-quality public spaces, demonstrating that modern infrastructure can be not only efficient but also architecturally attractive. “For FOROOM, this project sets the direction for our thinking about the future of industrial and urban design,” said Bartłomiej Grotte, architect, CEO of Foroom and one of the project’s designers.
An integral part of the complex is also a modern waste sorting facility with a capacity of 30,000 tonnes per year, supporting the development of the circular economy and the achievement of the city’s recycling targets.
The project stands out not only for its scale and technological sophistication, but also for the quality of its architectural solutions. The design team, comprising Foroom, Sweco Consulting and Sweco GmbH, set itself the goal of creating a facility that goes beyond the typical industrial infrastructure model and becomes an integral part of the city.
An educational trail has been created within the building, illustrating the process of energy recovery from waste, along with a viewing point on the chimney from which visitors can admire the panorama of Warsaw. Green spaces with a total area of approximately 20,000 m² have been designed on the building’s roofs, planted with native Mazovian vegetation. A mini apiary and an amphitheatre have also been created there. The plant’s distinctive structures, clad in a mesh façade, are highlighted after dark by striking lighting.
Particular attention was paid to environmental solutions. Advanced flue gas treatment systems, continuous emission monitoring and technologies to reduce noise and odour nuisance mean that the Warsaw Power Station is one of the most modern and environmentally friendly facilities of its kind in Poland. The facility is an example of responsible urban infrastructure design, combining high technological standards with a focus on the quality of the environment and the comfort of residents.
