In recent years, cities have increasingly paid attention to sustainability and ecology. One of the most interesting projects aimed at improving the quality of life for residents is the urban orchard at 31A Jasna Street in Gliwice. This innovative project combines ecological, social and aesthetic functions to create a place that is friendly to both people and nature.
Project location and purpose
The urban orchard will be located in a strategic location – in the vicinity of the city office. The choice of this location is not accidental – it allows to observe the reaction of residents and assess how the community will perceive such a form of urban greenery. In addition, the proximity of recreational facilities, sports fields, a shopping arcade and residential areas means that the orchard can become a natural place for relaxation and integration for the local community.
Urban orchard in Gliwice – structure and organisation
The orchard, covering an area of almost 15 acres, will consist of 56 fruit trees, among which 24 apple trees will dominate. In addition to these, 11 pear trees, 7 plum trees, 4 Asian pear trees and 10 cherry trees will be planted, creating a diverse and fruit-rich landscape. The trees will be spaced evenly but forming loose, natural-looking clusters that will act as small groves. The existing trees will be retained and integrated into the overall design. The orchard will be closed off from the office building and the pavement by a row of fruit trees, and will contain spaces for relaxation. The deckchairs and benches along the main walking path will provide a comfortable environment for relaxation.

Protection and development of the green oasis
In the early stages of the orchard’s development, it is envisaged that a rail fence will be used to protect the young trees from trampling. As the plants grow and the fruit becomes more readily available, the fence will be removed, allowing residents to freely enjoy the benefits of the orchard.
Urban orchard in Gliwice and biodiversity and aesthetics
The project also envisages enriching the space under the trees by planting early autumn plants such as flowering bulbs and creeping perennials. This will ensure that the orchard will be pleasing to the eye at any time of the year. In addition, the lawn areas will be enriched with seeded vegetation, creating a so-called biocenotic lawn. Its limited mowing will help to protect a variety of organisms, including pollinators, birds and other small animals.
Gliwice urban orchard as a symbol of ecological change
The urban orchard at Gliwice City Hall is both a recreational and aesthetic space and an expression of the city’s pro-ecological policy. The project is an example of a harmonious combination of nature and urban space, inspiring further initiatives to support environmental protection and improve the quality of life of residents.
