The G-Beach Residence, designed by the architectural practice B D M Architetti, has been built in Jesolo, Italy. The design draws inspiration from modernism and the legacy of Oscar Niemeyer. The new building develops this architectural narrative, maintaining a dialogue with the existing building and the coastal pine forest.
G-Beach Residence: inspired by Niemeyer
The starting point for B D M Architetti’s design was the Hotel Bellevue, which was completed in 1956. In that project, Renzo Menegazzo drew inspiration from Oscar Niemeyer’s 1955 Library in Belo Horizonte. Elements associated with Brazilian modernism are evident here, including facades of openwork brick trusses, pilotis, reinforced concrete columns supporting the upper storeys, a glazed ground floor emphasising the effect of a suspended structure, and a cylindrical core which lends the entire composition a more sculptural tone. These motifs served as inspiration for the architects designing the new building on the Adriatic coast.
A dialogue between two buildings and the landscape
G-Beach Residence employs a similar architectural language. The design utilises concrete, glass and facing brick, echoing the materials used in the Bellevue Hotel. The new building is situated perpendicular to the historic hotel, on the eastern side of the plot. The elongated form, facing the beach, has created an internal courtyard onto which the flats and hotel rooms open. All the main rooms in the flats open out towards the sea – this allows residents to enjoy magnificent views.
Light as an element of G-Beach Residence
Large glazed areas allow residents to experience the pine forest and coastal landscape almost within arm’s reach. On the top floor, there are terraces offering a panoramic, 360-degree view of the sea, whilst the perimeter terraces and western loggias create an intermediate zone between the flats and their surroundings. Light filtering through the pine tree canopies and the openwork brick screens plays a key role in the G-Beach Residence design, altering the perception of the interiors throughout the day. Underground garages are also provided. The whole complex forms an aesthetic and inspiring development set against the backdrop of the Adriatic coast.
