Gdańsk invests in monuments. Renovation of a tenement house at 11 Biskupia Street has just finished

In Gdańsk’s Biskupia Górka, a place full of historical charm, a comprehensive renovation of the tenement house at 11 Biskupia Street has been completed. This eclectic building, erected in 1910, is a valuable element of the city’s architectural heritage, entered in the Communal Register of Historical Monuments. The project, carried out as part of the ‘Revitalisation of Biskupia Górka and Stare Chełm’ programme, restored the tenement to its former splendour, while introducing modern technologies and amenities.

Pre-war tenement house renovation – scope of works

The renovation of the tenement house at 11 Biskupia St. was a wide-ranging undertaking, covering practically all elements of the building. The construction work included, among other things, horizontal and vertical insulation with thermal insulation, the construction of a new foundation slab and plaster restoration. The roof was also replaced, which gained a wooden structure, and a new staircase was designed to mimic the original historical elements. An important stage of the work was the strengthening of the pillars between the windows, the sealing of the roof covering and the restoration of the architectural detailing of the brick façade, which underwent specialised conservation work. The ornamentation of the gables and dormers was also restored.

Nine residential units received new finishes and basic furnishings, and the historically styled door and window woodwork was replaced. The whole has been brought up to modern standards.

New installations in a historic building

The renovation work also included sanitary, electrical and heating installations, ensuring the safety and comfort of users. A sanitary sewage system, central heating and hybrid ventilation were installed in the building. One of the most important elements of the modernisation was the introduction of a Building Management System (BMS). It allows energy and utility consumption to be monitored, significantly optimising operating costs.
