The tenement block at 15/16 Rejtana Street in Gdańsk’s Orunia district is set to undergo renovation. Gdańsk Real Estate is currently preparing the design and cost estimate documentation, which will set out the detailed scope of the works. Work on the concept is due to be completed at the turn of summer and autumn, whilst the actual renovation will begin in 2027.
Rejtana 15/16 – a building steeped in history
The Neo-Renaissance tenement house at 15/16 Rejtana Street was built 122 years ago, when Orunia was developing as a working-class suburb of Gdańsk. The district itself has a much longer history, as the first records of it date back to the 14th century. However, the most significant changes took place in the 19th century. The construction of the Gdańsk–Tczew railway line between 1850 and 1852 significantly accelerated the development of the area, where factories, schools and numerous tenement blocks began to spring up, intended for railway workers and employees of nearby industrial plants. Orunia was incorporated into Gdańsk administratively in 1933.
The buildings on Rejtana Street survived the war
Rejtana Street was laid out at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. Rows of brick tenement houses with high roofs and richly decorated façades sprang up along it. The building at numbers 15/16 has retained its historic form and is situated within a conservation area. It is worth noting that during the battles for Gdańsk in March 1945, Orunia did not suffer as much damage as the city centre, thanks to which a significant part of the old buildings has survived to this day.
Comprehensive renovation of Rejtana 15/16
The documentation currently being prepared will set out the detailed scope of the works. However, it is already known that the tenement block will definitely undergo thermal modernisation. The external walls, the ceiling above the unheated basement and the ceiling beneath the loft will be insulated. The building will be fitted with new wooden windows and a new front door, as well as new electrical and plumbing installations. The tenement will also be connected to the municipal district heating network. The outbuilding, together with the wall leading to the tenement, will also be renovated, and the area around the property will be tidied up.
The regeneration of Orunia is gathering pace
For many years after the war, the tenement blocks on Rejtana Street underwent mainly routine repairs, which over time led to a deterioration in their technical condition. Since 2017, Orunia has been one of Gdańsk’s key regeneration areas, which is why municipal buildings, public spaces and green areas are being progressively renovated here. Meanwhile, in recent years, the tenement block at 20 Rejtana Street has undergone a comprehensive refurbishment, as we reported HERE. The refurbishment of the building at 15/16 Rejtana Street will be the next step towards restoring this part of the city to its former charm.
