One of the key aspects of health and well-being is restorative sleep. The right choice of mattress can make a significant difference to the comfort of your night’s rest. So how do you choose a model that meets your expectations?
Why replace your mattress with a new one?
We often do not realise how much the condition of a mattress affects the quality of our sleep. Even if it looks good at first glance, over the years it loses its properties – springiness, elasticity or ability to support the body properly. As a result of daily use, the inner layers wear down, leading to unevenness and pressure points, which can significantly reduce comfort. It is also worth paying attention to sleep hygiene. Dust, dust mites and other allergens can accumulate in the mattress, which can affect the quality of rest for sensitive people. Proper care and the use of anti-allergenic covers help to reduce this problem, but after a few years, even the best model becomes a breeding ground for microorganisms. It is recommended to replace your mattress every 7-10 years, but there are situations where it is worth doing this sooner. If you notice that you are waking up more and more often with back pain, having difficulty falling asleep or feeling tired despite an adequate length of sleep, this is a sign that your mattress no longer provides the right support. Modern models offer a range of technologies to improve the quality of your rest.
Types of mattresses – which model is best for you?
Choosing a mattress is not a simple decision, as there are many different models on the market, each with their own unique characteristics. It’s a good idea to familiarise yourself with the basic types of mattresses and then match them to your individual needs. And these include:
- foam mattresses-characterised by their ability to conform to the contours of the body. They use different types of foam, such as high-elastic, thermoelastic or polyurethane. Models with thermoelastic foam react to the body’s heat, gradually adapting to the silhouette, which reduces pressure points (as in the case of the Hilding Salsa mattress, which combines Flexifoam with 7 zones of firmness and thermoelastic Visco foam).
- spring (pocket) mattresses– modern spring models no longer resemble the classic versions known from years ago. Each spring is placed in a separate pocket, which makes them work independently of each other (this can be seen on the example of the Hilding Flamenco mattress). This allows the mattress to adapt to the shape of the body and minimises the effect of motion transfer, which is important for couples sleeping together.
- hybrid mattresses-combine the advantages of foam, latex and springs. These types of mattresses provide optimum support as well as comfort, while offering good air circulation and stability. This is a versatile solution for those seeking comfort.
Mattress firmness – how to choose the right one?
One of the most important factors influencing sleep comfort is the firmness of the mattress. The right level of firmness can promote stable body support during rest. Mattresses are classified according to the firmness scale:
- soft – intended for people weighing less than 60 kg and children. They conform well to the body, but can cause a sinking sensation in people weighing more than 60 kg.
- medium – suitable for people weighing up to 80 kg, they provide good support while making sleep comfortable. Examples include the Hilding Dance.
- hard –the most popular choice, recommended for people weighing 80-100 kg, but lighter people can rest on it just as well if they prefer to sleep on a firmer surface. They offer a balance between flexibility and stability.
- extra firm – recommended for people weighing over 100 kg, as they provide solid support and prevent the mattress from sinking. This is, for example, a model with medical device statusHildingPasodoble.
Side sleepers should choose softer mattresses that reduce pressure on the hips and shoulders. Conversely, back or stomach sleepers may prefer firmer models that keep the natural curves of the spine in the right position. Even so, choosing the right firmness depends mainly on the individual’s feelings and the weight of the user.
Sleep plays an important role in everyday life, so it is worth choosing a mattress that is tailored to your preferences.
