Grzybowska Street in Warsaw will undergo extensive modernisation to improve the aesthetics, safety and functionality of this key urban artery. The Stołeczny Zarząd Rozbudowy Miasta (Capital City Development Authority) has announced a tender for work on an approximately 1.5 km-long section, which covers the area from Jana Pawła II Avenue to Siedmiogrodzka Street, in the area of the intersection with Karolkowa Street. The extension of the street will not only make it easier to move around the city, but will also significantly enrich its green space. Green Grzybowska will be ready to welcome residents within the next two years.
The project involves the construction of new roadways, pavements and public transport stops. New pavements will be built along both sides of the street, and cyclists will be able to use dedicated cycle paths or designated lanes on the carriageway. The street in the section from Jana Pawła II Avenue to Towarowa Street will have two carriageways, each with one lane, and there will be additional turning lanes near the intersections. Whereas from Towarowa Street to Karolkowa Street, the street will be single carriageway with two lanes. The project also envisages tidying up parking spaces, which will improve both aesthetics and safety.

One of the key elements of the project is to increase the amount of greenery along Grzybowska Street. As part of the project, more than 100 new trees will be planted, mainly field maples, and a few dozen tree-shrubs of the tree sagebrush. A total of around 13,000 shrubs will also appear, including roses, alpine currants and arborvitae. The green areas will harmonise with the layout of the pavements and cycle paths without affecting the street’s capacity. The extension of Grzybowska Street also takes into account the needs of property owners adjacent to the road. New exits and accesses to buildings will be created, which will improve the accessibility and functionality of commercial, office and residential areas. The aesthetics of the street will benefit from tidier space and modern architectural solutions.
The works will also include the modernisation of the underground infrastructure, including the water mains, heat mains, power mains and teletechnical sewers. A new rainwater drainage system will allow water to be drained efficiently, which will minimise the risk of flooding in the street during heavy rainfall. It is also planned to install modern street lighting, which will increase visibility and safety along the entire stretch, especially at pedestrian crossings. The Grzybowska Street extension project is co-financed by the City of Warsaw and private investors – developers who are carrying out their investments along the street. Once completed, Grzybowska Street will become a modern and green thoroughfare, adapted to the needs of the residents and users of this dynamically developing part of Warsaw.
The entire works should be completed within 21 months of signing the contract with the contractor, which means that the new, green Grzybowska will be ready to welcome residents within the next two years.
