The Warsaw City Hall has announced the eagerly awaited start of work on the reconstruction of Marszałkowska Street. The modernisation will cover the section from Widok Street to the bus stop complex at Królewska Street and is part of the wider New Warsaw Centre programme. The project is being carried out jointly by Tramwaje Warszawskie and Zarząd Dróg Miejskich. Green Marszałkowska is intended to improve the image of the capital’s city centre and become friendly to all its users.
A completely new track bed will be built along the entire kilometre-long stretch, and the Królewska stop will undergo significant modernisation. The sections of track between Widok and Świętokrzyska Streets were repaired many years ago, so they already require urgent intervention. The intersection with Świętokrzyska Street, on the other hand, will not be affected by the works as it underwent modernisation during the construction of the central section of the second metro line. One of the main objectives of the investment is to improve travel comfort. As a result of the reconstruction, speed limits will disappear and trams will move more quietly. In addition, a green track bed planted with sedum is planned between Królewska and Świętokrzyska streets, while the section leading to the Dmowskiego roundabout will have a surface that allows emergency vehicles to pass. This decision was taken at the request of the Regional Ambulance and Sanitary Transport Station.

The new organisation of the space of Marszałkowska Street also envisages rows of trees and greenery planting along the tracks. Elm trees, shrubs and perennials will appear in designated areas and will be introduced in two stages. Once the track works have been completed, the City Roads Authority will proceed. Marszałkowska Street will also receive new solutions for pedestrians, cyclists and drivers. The project includes two above-ground crossings of the carriageway at the level of Złota Street and Sienkiewicza Street, as well as new cycle crossings that will complete the network of routes in Śródmieście. The subway by the Centrum metro will be retained. For drivers, two lanes in each direction, additional turning lanes and a U-turn at Zlota and a left turn at Sienkiewicza are planned.
On the eastern side of the street, a missing section of the cycle path will be created between Swietokrzyska and Królewska Street, while an elevated pedestrian crossing and a cycle crossing have been designed at the junction with Rysia Street. Track works are due to start on 14 June and will last until mid-October.
