The small square next to Empik, situated right next to Warsaw’s Dmowskiego roundabout and the Metropol Hotel, is set to be transformed this autumn into a park featuring trees, shrubs and a new leisure area. The concrete car park will make way for greenery and granite-paved paths.
The square by Empik is set for a makeover
Today, concrete and cars dominate the area, and the whole space does not evoke positive feelings. However, in a few months’ time, the square by Empik will become another green oasis. The Public Spaces Authority has just signed a contract with the Warsaw-based firm Adrog, which is responsible for carrying out the project worth over PLN 3.3 million gross. Out of six bids, it was their proposal that was selected as the most advantageous. The contractor has 150 days to complete the work.
Concrete will give way to trees and granite paths
As part of the project, a significant portion of the paved surface will be removed. In its place, 10 green islands planted with vegetation will appear, including 29 trees (common hornbeams and small-leaved lime trees). These will be accompanied by 55 large solitary shrubs. Among them will be common bird cherries and common spindle trees. The floral composition will be complemented by perennials: eastern cherry laurel, dogwood, honeysuckle, and common ivy. New paths paved with granite slabs will run through the square, and benches and an outdoor dining area will be situated amongst the greenery near the hotel entrance.
The area around the Dmowskiego roundabout with a new atmosphere
The most prestigious part of the new square will be located in the immediate vicinity of the roundabout. Three green islands will be subtly illuminated by LED lights concealed within the paving. In the evening, the square is set to have a completely different atmosphere to the present one, more intimate and pedestrian-friendly. For several years now, the City Council has been reducing the amount of concrete in Śródmieście and expanding the space dedicated to residents. The area around the Dmowskiego roundabout has already undergone major changes involving new crossings and additional planting. Now, greenery will also appear around the recently renovated pavilion of the former Cepelia. This is one of the most important examples of post-war modernism in Warsaw. The square by Empik to become a green oasis
The most significant change the square will undergo is, of course, the removal of the car park next to the Metropol Hotel. Until now, it has been used exclusively by guests of the hotel. Once the work is complete, only a few parking spaces on private land will remain here. The rest of the area will be transformed into a public space for relaxation in the heart of the bustling city.
