Plac przy Empiku

Greenery instead of a car park. The square by Empik is undergoing major changes

The small square next to Empik, near Warsaw’s Dmowskiego roundabout and the Metropol Hotel, is being transformed into a green space. The area previously occupied by cars will be filled with trees, shrubs and benches. The concrete surface will be replaced by planting and granite paths.

The square by Empik will be green

Until now, the area near the Metropol Hotel has primarily served motorists. In the coming months, however, it is set to take on a completely different function. This spring, the Public Spaces Authority signed a contract with the Warsaw-based company Adrog for the redevelopment of the square. Its bid was deemed the most favourable out of six submissions. The value of the project exceeds PLN 3.3 million gross, and the contractor has 150 days to complete the works.

Trees instead of concrete paving

A significant part of the paved area will be removed. Ten green islands will be created here, on which 29 trees will be planted, including common hornbeams and small-leaved lime trees. These will be complemented by 55 large solitary shrubs, including common bird cherry and common spindle. The plantings will also include eastern laurels, dogwoods, honeysuckles, mock orange and common ivy. Pedestrians will be able to enjoy paths paved with granite slabs. Benches will be placed alongside them, and an outdoor dining area will be situated near the hotel entrance.

Greenery and lighting at the Dmowskiego roundabout

The most impressive section of the square will be created on the side facing the roundabout. Three green islands will be illuminated by LED lights embedded in the paving. After dark, the light will highlight the vegetation and emphasise the intimate atmosphere of this part of the square. The redevelopment marks another change in the area, which has previously seen the creation of at-grade pedestrian crossings and additional planting. Greenery will now also appear next to the recently renovated pavilion of the former Cepelia, one of the most important examples of post-war modernism in Warsaw. This marks a further stage in reducing concrete surfaces in Śródmieście.

The square by Empik for everyone

The biggest change will be the removal of the car park previously used mainly by guests of the Metropol Hotel. After the redevelopment, only a few parking spaces will remain on private land. The rest of the area will become accessible to everyone. In place of the cars, there will be a space where people can sit and relax amidst the greenery.
