In the centre of Warsaw, another stage of greening public spaces is starting. This time the work will cover Trzech Krzyży Square, on the section between Hoża and Żurawia Streets. This area belongs to the Ministry of Development and Technology, which has agreed to transform it. Thanks to the cooperation with the ministry, it will be possible to reduce the area of the car park and introduce new vegetation in its place.
The Green Revolution at Trzech Krzyży Square is a continuation of changes initiated two years ago. At that time, 28 large trees were planted in the square after consultation with the Mazovian Voivodeship Historic Preservation Officer and the National Heritage Institute. These included lime trees, hawthorns and pear trees. Some of them had been grown in nurseries for up to a dozen years. Children from local kindergartens and primary schools took part in the symbolic planting as patrons of the trees. A plaque commemorating the event was placed next to each tree. The first phase of the work triggered a wide-ranging discussion about the role of greenery in the city centre and the possibilities of reducing the space allocated to car traffic. The western frontage of the square, where the Ministry building and the extensive car park are located, was often pointed out. However, this area does not belong to the city and therefore could not be included in the previous measures. After the initial works were completed, the city entered into discussions with the ministry, which yielded a positive result.
During the planned works, the concrete block surface in the central part of the car park, including the so-called teardrop adjacent to the pavement, will be removed. In this place, a row of ten lime trees will appear, the same as those growing on the eastern side of the square, near Książęca Street. In addition, new lawns, perennial beds and an iris hedge are planned. Magnolias will be planted near the steps in front of the Ministry’s headquarters. The works will start any moment now. First, part of the pavement will be removed, then a new extension of the pavement will be built next to the existing pedestrian crossing, which will improve the accessibility of this part of the square. The paving work will be carried out by Zakład Remontów i Konserwacji Dróg, and the Werde company will be responsible for the planting. The cost of the project will be approximately PLN 400 000. As part of the same investment, it is also planned to plant six hornbeam trees in Mazowiecka Street, in the areas excluded from traffic between the parking spaces. Preparatory work will begin this week.
