Greenery instead of hard pavement. Baczyńskiego Square in Tychy in a new version

This implementation shows that it is not necessary to spend many millions of zloty to combat concretisation. More greenery can be introduced at a lower cost. Baczyńskiego Square in Tychy has recently been rebuilt, with some of the hard pavement gone and greenery now growing in the exposed areas.

Baczyński Square is one of the most representative places in Tychy. Regular cultural events are held here in summer and the Christmas Market in winter. Residents stroll here and the eyes are delighted by a large fountain in the shape of a blowfish.

The square is the central, representative part of housing estate B. Its southern frontage is distinguished by the characteristic building with turrets, designed by Jerzy Czyż, Jan Drużyński, Kazimierz Wejchert (and, according to some sources, also by Krystyna Mikucka and Andrzej Skopiński). The turrets illuminated at night were to be its attraction. It also housed a cinema, which opened in 1961. The facility could accommodate an impressive 650 spectators.

The redevelopment of the square took place in 2008-2009 according to a design by Wojciech Klass. The facades of the buildings and the pavement were then renewed. Subsequent years have shown that there is too much hard pavement here and a so-called heat island effect develops in summer.

City officials decided to reduce this effect and rebuild the square, introducing more greenery. Parts of the square were removed and replaced with trees and shrubs. Solutions were also implemented to help retain rainwater.

Baczyński Square in Tychy was already green before. Old trees grew there, which were supplemented with 14 new ones and over 950 sq m of low plants. A total of 665 sq m of hard surfacing was removed from the square. The green belts around the trees already growing were also widened. This gave them more space.

The cost of the works amounted to just under half a million zloty. Half of this amount came from the Provincial Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management in Katowice.
