Sienkiewicza Street in Warsaw will be the next location in Śródmieście to be transformed into a green oasis, all as part of the New Centre of Warsaw programme. From 15 April, drivers will not be able to drive along the section between Marszałkowska and Jasna. Work on the entire block comprising Złota, Zgoda, Jasna and Sienkiewicza streets is scheduled to be completed later this year.
New Centre of Warsaw – work is underway
With the arrival of spring, teams from the City Roads Authority have returned to the site. Work has picked up pace and is taking place on several streets simultaneously. On Marszałkowska, resurfacing and the construction of a cycle path are underway; on Jasna, workers are dealing with underground installations; and on Złota, the first equipment for the fountains has appeared. The part of Śródmieście covered by the New Centre of Warsaw programme will see significantly more greenery. Forty-five large elms will be planted on Złota Street – the first specimens are already adorning the future square. This is the ‘New Horizon’ variety from the Resista group, bred specifically for the harsh conditions of the city. The trees are over 9 metres tall and have been maturing in nurseries for over a decade. They will now provide shade for Warsaw residents out for a stroll or a rest.
Sienkiewicza Street in Warsaw is to be rebuilt
The City Roads Authority will now focus on Sienkiewicza Street, where work is just getting underway on the section between Marszałkowska and Jasna. A neat row of brand-new trees will line the carriageway, and parking spaces will give way to green squares on both sides of the street. The unattractive space near Młynarski Square, meanwhile, will be given a completely new function. A music garden will be created there, featuring a platform serving as a stage, surrounded by noise-reducing vegetation. On the opposite side, a relaxation area with benches and a children’s play area is planned.

A green Sienkiewicza Street instead of asphalt
The redevelopment as part of the New Centre of Warsaw covers an area of approximately 2.5 hectares and includes Złota, Zgoda, Jasna and Sienkiewicza Streets. The scale of this work goes far beyond simply replacing the road surface. Traffic will be calmed on the modernised streets, with priority given to pedestrians and cyclists. In place of asphalt, concrete and densely parked cars, there will be squares, open spaces and areas for relaxation amidst greenery and flowers. The concept also includes the construction of a retention basin alongside the removal of some underground utilities.
Redevelopment of Warsaw’s City Centre
Work on the project, worth approximately PLN 49 million, began in August 2024. The works are being carried out in phases to ensure the continued functioning of this part of Warsaw’s city centre. Once the project is complete, the area will be unrecognisable. The number of parking spaces will be significantly reduced, and car traffic will be restricted mainly to residents, emergency services and deliveries. Other drivers will be able to use the underground car park beneath Powstańców Warszawy Square. In return, a completely new quality of space will emerge. Several hundred trees, shrubs, flowerbeds, benches and fountains will finally create a welcoming environment. This marks a clear shift towards a greener, more accessible city centre.
