He has a shower in the living room. An unusual artist’s flat

Its design was prepared by David Neuhäusl and Matěj Hunal of the NEUHÄUSL HUNAL studio. The flat was created for a sculptor who decided to set up his new studio here. This required a great deal of intervention in the interior, resulting, among other things, in a centrally placed shower

The flat is located in a block of flats in Prague, Czech Republic. Its surface area is 74 square metres. Vladimír Bachorík, who is a sculptor and glassmaker, lives here. The artist has always worked in his flat. However, he decided to carry out an extensive renovation in order to tidy up the space and set aside a place to work

In preparing the project, the architects became aware of the owner’s needs, who stipulated that he did not want internal doors. He was open to non-standard solutions, which the design duo eagerly took advantage of

The designers decided to let in as much natural light as possible. The boundaries of rooms or zones were blurred and the interior became open. Individual segments have been obscured in some places by translucent glass. An example of this is the large shower cubicle, which, although positioned in the centre of the plan, appears as a glass tube through which light passes freely. The architects were aware that they were working in an old block of flats, so the challenge was to redesign the plumbing infrastructure

In addition, the wardrobe, pantry and work areas were separated by glass panels

When designing, we adhere to the principle that a uniform space should be the background for the life (in this case, mainly work) of its inhabitant, say the architects

The interior is almost ascetic. The number of objects has been reduced to a minimum. This can be seen in the bedroom, which is reduced to a bed, a bookcase with books and memorabilia, and plants. The walls have been given a raw finish and only in some places white paint and tiny tiles have been used. Another interesting feature is the kitchen area, which resembles a workroom. It’s a deliberate measure – more sculptures than meals are created in the spacious kitchen
