Flats or houses by the Baltic Sea are becoming increasingly popular. However, few developments can boast such proximity to the sea. The single-family house Aurora House is a project prepared by the REFORM ARCHITECT studio of Marcin Tomaszewski. Construction of the house is underway.
Aurora House is located by the Baltic Sea, in the first line of the coast. For the architect, designing in such a location was a huge challenge.
Being on the plot, I didn’t pay attention to the constraints – and the fact that the plot is quite narrow…, and the fact that the entrance to the plot is from the south…, all this was unimportant. The most important thing was what I could see from the plot. The boundlessness, the view to the horizon! I wanted the building to take what was most valuable from the surroundings – the view, the colours, the details – and at the same time give the viewer architecture with a capital A, ” says architect Marcin Tomaszewski.
The house was designed as a cube. The design makes use of geometric stratification, which introduces separate cuboids into the project, unrelated to each other but emerging from one common base. This arrangement of the form is conducive to the creation of a multi-level structure, where individual rooms and functional zones are placed on different mezzanines.
The part on the ground floor functions as an entrance area, a technical area with garage and a guest bedroom area. Higher up on the mezzanine is the investors’ master bedroom and the technical area of the swimming pool with the pool basin.
The owners of the building will benefit from a spacious open space on the first floor with access to a covered terrace. At the highest level on the second floor, the architect has designed a viewing terrace with a canopy and a barbecue area. The attraction of the top floor is the swimming pool, which has been sunk into the body of the building.
Despite its complex form, the building exudes a minimalist character, which is emphasised by the natural stoneware finish in shades of sandy white. This subtle colour scheme harmonises with its surroundings, creating a coherent composition with the coastal landscape. Another interesting element is the carefully designed apertures installed on the windows, which enhance the privacy and aesthetics of the building. They refer to the natural coverings of wild beaches and the traditional wicker covers used on dunes in Poland, adding local context and cultural significance to the project.
The total area of the house is 350sq m.
