This is a tenement house located on Westerplatte Street in Kraków, built in 1887 to a design by Karol Zaremba. There is a space on one of the floors, which was designed by Łukasz Młynarski in close collaboration with the owner.
The centre of Krakow, the vicinity of the Juliusz Słowacki Theatre, the Planty… In such an attractive location, there is a 270 sq m flat. Due to the historical nature of the building in which the premises are located, the interior was designed on the basis of the original layout, which offered one flat on one floor. The space was divided into three functional flats that can be rented out.
During the conversion, an effort was made to preserve as much of the original fabric as possible. Partition walls that had been created due to the previous owners adjusting the function of the rooms were removed or moved. In this way, the spaces meet contemporary needs.
Because of the beautiful stuccowork, all installation work took place away from the ceilings. In the course of the work, excavations were also carried out in consultation with the conservator, and damaged window and door woodwork was restored, reports Łukasz Młynarski.
During the redevelopment, the challenge was to build the right interior atmosphere. On the one hand, the plan was to emphasise historical elements and preserve the unique character, while on the other hand, by adding contemporary furnishings, the intention was to achieve a balance between history and modernity. The space had to be traditional and timeless at the same time. It was possible to create a space conducive to tranquillity.
The interior is dominated by a beige colour scheme, matching the vintage style. Shades of beige provide a timeless background. Stronger accents appear in the furnishings and graphics. The old tiled cooker has been preserved in the interior and is still functional. The atmosphere is created by stucco, renovated floors and woodwork. Some of the objects that decorate the space come from antique shops. These include chandeliers and mirrors, for example.
