Hollow blocks – what are these building materials?

Hollow blocks are one of the most popular building materials, used in various types of construction – from single-family homes to industrial buildings to large commercial developments. In this article, we discuss what exactly hollow blocks are, what properties they have and what types there are.

What are hollow blocks?

Hollow blocks are building blocks made of various materials. They are distinguished by their characteristic internal openings (chambers), which reduce their weight while improving their thermal insulation properties. They are commonly used in the construction industry for, among other things, load-bearing walls, partition walls, foundations and other structures where lightness and good insulation are important.

Advantages of hollow blocks

Hollow blocks have many advantages which make them so popular in the construction industry:

  • lightness – thanks to their internal openings, they are lighter than solid concrete blocks, and this makes work on site significantly easier;
  • thermal insulation – hollow bricks insulate heat very well, which makes it possible to build energy-efficient buildings;
  • durability – despite their lightness, hollow bricks are very durable and can be used for load-bearing walls;
  • easy to assemble – large size and modular shape of the blocks allow for fast and effective construction of walls.

Types of blocks

Hollow blocks differ primarily in terms of the material from which they are made and the resulting properties.

Ceramic blocks

This is one of the most popular types of hollow blocks. They are made from clay fired at high temperatures, which gives them high durability and excellent insulation properties. Ceramic blocks have good thermal and acoustic insulation, as well as high fire resistance.

Concrete blocks

Concrete blocks are building materials made of concrete, often used in the construction of foundations, external walls and load-bearing structures. They are heavier than clay blocks and do not have such good thermal insulation properties, but at the same time have high compressive strength and weather resistance. They are particularly recommended for the construction of heavy-duty structures such as industrial halls, warehouses or public buildings.

Aerated concrete blocks (cellular concrete)

Aerated concrete blocks, also known as cellular concrete, are lightweight building blocks that are made from low-density concrete. They are very easy to work with – they can be cut and adjusted as required on the construction site. Aerated concrete also has good insulation properties, both thermal and acoustic.

Silicate blocks

Silicate blocks are made from a mixture of lime, sand and water, which gives them exceptional strength. Silicate blocks have very good sound insulation, which is why they are often used to build partition walls to dampen sounds between rooms. They can also perform well for the construction of external walls, as they are resistant to weather conditions.

Application of hollow blocks in construction

Hollow blocks are widely used in the construction industry due to their unique properties.

Load-bearing and external walls

One of the basic applications of hollow bricks is the construction of load-bearing and external walls. For this type of construction, ceramic and concrete hollow bricks work best due to their strength. Ceramic blocks additionally provide excellent thermal insulation, so energy-efficient buildings can be built.

Partition walls

Aerated concrete and silicate blocks are often used for partition walls inside buildings. Thanks to their lightness, they are easy to lay and at the same time provide good sound insulation between rooms. Partition walls made from aerated concrete blocks allow great flexibility in interior design.

Foundations and industrial structures

Concrete blocks are readily used in industrial construction and in the construction of foundations or retaining walls because of their high strength. This is because concrete blocks are resistant to moisture, frost and mechanical loads.

Hollow blocks are construction materials that are definitely worth considering.
