The houses by the forest in Pagórska Wola were designed by architects Łukasz Derus and Katarzyna Pikiewicz-Derus from the Ładnie. design studio. The project was located in the small village of Pogórska Wola in the Małopolskie Voivodeship. It is a complex of two single-storey residential buildings located in an unusual location – in the vicinity of a forest and old wooden homestead buildings, typical of the Polish countryside. Due to the location of the project, its primary objective was to inscribe the new buildings in the landscape and relate their form to the historic buildings.
The concept of the houses is based on a combination of the characteristic simple, compact block with a gable roof with a cuboid building forming a garage. A cut-out in the front elevation breaks this strong form and emphasises the main entrance to the house, while large glazings open up the interior to the garden.
The façade of both houses is planned in larch wood, but the buildings will differ in its shade – one will be clad with tan boards and the other with natural boards that will patina over time. The roof and the body of the garage are finished with dark grey seamed metal sheets.
The functional layout of the houses allows comfortable living for a family of 3-4 people. The focal point is a large living room with a kitchen and an exit to the terrace, providing a place to meet and relax. The bedrooms, bathroom, toilet and technical rooms are located at the ends of the buildings, ensuring privacy and comfortable use of the space.
In order to best fit in with the landscape, the buildings have been located so that as few existing trees as possible have to be cut down during construction. This will create private birch groves, accessible directly from the terraces.
