This flat in a tenement block, designed by Joanna Piórko of the Wrażenia Przestrzenne studio, was conceived as a space that matures alongside its residents. The interior is based on timeless materials, a calm colour palette and flexible solutions, allowing it to evolve as the residents go through different stages of life.
The design is based on a combination of warm walnut wood and muted blue. This pairing creates an elegant, understated base, enlivened by orange accents – these introduce energy without dominating the overall scheme. The result is a harmonious interior that is nonetheless full of character, ready for future changes.
Walnut, blue and orange
Joanna Piórko chose materials that naturally complement the building’s historic fabric. Walnut wood adds warmth to the space, whilst muted blue introduces softness and visual order. The orange details – ranging from small accessories to lighting fixtures – are a deliberate touch that adds a sense of freshness to the interior. Thanks to this, the flat is far from static. It has the potential to evolve alongside its residents, whilst maintaining a sense of cohesion and elegance.
Vintage and design icons
In the living room, a restored vintage table, paired with retro-style Fameg chairs, has become the focal point. This choice emphasises respect for the history of the space, whilst lending a sense of lightness to the design. The look is complemented by lighting from Louis Poulsen – a classic of global design that adds a subtle, timeless touch. The furniture and lamps work together to create the flat’s atmosphere, whilst leaving space for the residents’ personal belongings.
One of the key principles of the design was the flexibility of the functional layout. An additional area has been carved out in the living room, which can serve as a child’s room, a private study or a space for creative work. This solution allows the residents to adapt the space to their current needs without the need for major alterations. As a result, the interior becomes a tool that supports everyday life.
A bespoke design
Custom-designed built-in joinery has been fitted throughout the flat, organising the space and emphasising its functional character. Blue tiles laid in a repetitive pattern create visual continuity between the rooms, reinforcing the colour scheme of the design. As a result, the flat remains cohesive without imposing a single way of using the space – it gives the residents freedom both now and in the future.
The result of Joanna Piórko’s work is an interior that supports everyday life rather than defining it. It is a flat that grows alongside its inhabitants, whilst retaining its elegance, functionality and openness to change.
