How was the slimmest Galaxy smartphone ever made? The designers answer

The Samsung brand has unveiled the Galaxy S25 Edge, the slimmest smartphone in the history of the Galaxy S series. The phone is just 5.8 mm thick. What challenges did the designers and engineers face? What does it look like to work on such a project? Jiyoung Lee and Hyoungshin Park, vice presidents of the Mobile eXperience (MX) Business design team at Samsung Electronics, talked about the device’s unique concept.

The Galaxy S25 Edge attracts attention with its exceptionally slim silhouette and minimalist form factor. “This model represents the most essential form of a smartphone by removing all unnecessary elements,” said Jiyoung Lee, who led the team responsible for designing the device.

During the design work, the team focused not only on the slimming down of the casing itself, but on the value that an ultra-slim device can give to the user. “Instead of focusing solely on how to make the phone even slimmer, we asked ourselves what new value a slimmer smartphone could offer,” Lee explained.

Materials and colours

A key element emphasising slimness is the harmonious combination of colour, material and finish (CMF). The titanium steel frame body combines elegance with durability, emphasising the design identity of the S25 Ultra series. The available versions – silver, blue and black – have been developed with the concept of giving the casing the impression of a pleasant glow, the device gently shimmers in the light.

“When designing the Galaxy S25 Edge, we considered colour depth and saturation, material integration, user preferences and manufacturing processes. As a result, we were able to express the symbolism and sophisticated identity of the Edge, while remaining consistent with the overall concept of the S25 series,” said Hyoungshin Park.

Sleek and useful

To ensure that slimness truly translates into comfort, the designers took care of ergonomics and functionality. “The Galaxy S25 Edge offers a natural one-handed grip that reduces wrist fatigue during prolonged use, and the thin bezels provide a more immersive visual experience,” added Lee. The front of the device remained flat, while the subtly contoured back “shapes to fit in the palm of the hand for comfortable everyday use,” the designer stressed.

Aesthetics in technology

Incorporating powerful components and an advanced camera into an ultra-thin body was one of the biggest challenges. “We couldn’t compromise on either the ultra-slim lines or the powerful 200 MP camera,” said Lee. To make the camera an integral part of the design, the same colour scheme and rear glass finish was used on the camera module, making the whole piece look like a unified structure. “We used a linear lens layout, a key part of Galaxy’s identity, to further emphasise the consistency of the design,” she added.

Achieving a uniform finish on the slimmer glass body required close inter-team collaboration. “To transfer the concept from the Galaxy S25 series to the thinner glass, we tested different colour combinations and layered finishes almost to the last minute before launch,” explained Park. The result is a device that combines extreme slimness with a distinctive premium look.

With its revolutionary reduced thickness, the Galaxy S25 Edge sets a new standard for slim smartphones. The designers have proven that you don’t have to sacrifice advanced technology to enjoy a phone that is just 5.8 mm thick and offers everything we expect from the next generation of smartphones with smart solutions like Galaxy AI at the forefront.
