Japandi in Sopot – this is how the project of a 120-square-metre flat, realised by an experienced architectural studio led by a married couple of architects Aleksandra Fajfer-Orłowska and Sławomir Orłowski, can be described in two words; it catches the eye with its well-thought-out concept and attention to detail. The flat is located on the outskirts of Sopot, in the buffer zone of the Tri-City Landscape Park. The interior harmoniously combines Japanese aesthetics with Nordic minimalism.
The flat was designed for a young couple with two children. It occupies the entire top floor of the building. The functional layout has been rearranged so as to open up the kitchen, which was originally a separate room. Visually, it is separated from the living room by a wooden cabinet with decorative display cases topped with a frame of flutes glass. Similar built-ins appear as partition walls in some rooms. Functional built-in units also include a concealed thermomix on a pull-out tray, various sizes of cargo or a sliding unit that allows the TV to be covered. The flat is characterised by recurring curves – in the detailing of the glass doors, on the milled kitchen handles, the fluted island or the corners of the walls, which have been bevelled and finished with marble plasterwork.
The interior is characterised by a subdued colour scheme with dominant shades of beige, taupe and natural wood tones broken up by colour accents. The use of high-quality materials such as natural plasters and fabrics, wood and sinters gives the space elegance and cosiness. Delicate accessories, such as potted plants and ceramic accessories, bring harmony and combine nature with a modern lifestyle.

As part of the realisation, not only aesthetic but also technological improvements were planned in detail. After rearranging the partition walls, radiators were replaced by underfloor heating and new installations were laid to integrate the management of various functionalities. The automation system allows residents to remotely control almost all aspects of the flat from the app – lighting and its dimming, audio in all rooms, underfloor heating, air conditioning, alarm, plant irrigation, curtains and external blinds.
Stretching so many installations required suspended ceilings in a few places. In the hallway, these took the form of a curved dark blue skylight. Underneath are custom-made paintings that gradient from the colour of the ceiling to the walls, subtly introducing the nautical accent that the clients wanted.
The effect is impressive, both for residents and guests, becoming an example of how a style inspired by the spirit of japanese can fit harmoniously into modern life in Sopot. The flat is not only a space to live in, but also a manifestation of the philosophy of aesthetics and comfort, which combine to create the perfect place to live by the Polish seaside.

About the studio:
Project 5R – is an in-house interior design studio for private individuals. “We are architects by training. Over the past years, we have gained experience in developing a wide variety of interior designs and bringing them to life in homes, townhouses, large-scale housing or commercial premises. Our mission is to create tailored and unique designs that reflect the needs and preferences of our clients. Combining a design vision with an engineering approach, we will develop comprehensive technical documentation to realise any project. We watch over the implementation in the form of author’s supervision or investor’s substitution – we buy materials, contract subcontractors and supervise their work so that the effect of the implemented project reflects its idea as closely as possible.” – reads www.projekt5r.pl
