In shades of earth. Flat in Bemowo designed by Matuszewski Studio

There is a flat in Warsaw’s Bemowo district that redefines the concept of urban comfort. It is a 53-square-metre space designed for a single person, a person who lives consciously, who values the rituals of the day and objects that matter. The interior does not dazzle with glamour – rather, it invites you to slow down, sit down, breathe and let everyday life flow at its own pace.

From the first step, you can feel the consistency and calmness here. Earthy tones dominate: browns, beiges and greens. It is not a palette that imposes itself on the eye, but a soft play of half-shadows, reminiscent of the light of a late afternoon. The focal point of the living room is a massive sofa in deep green – a piece of furniture that both binds the space together and gives it softness. It is accompanied by a marble table with a distinctive texture, bringing the natural coolness of stone and subtle elegance to the interior.

The architect in charge of the project emphasises that the aim was to create a space that “is a backdrop for life – not a set design that dictates the tone”. And indeed, the flat does not try to dominate. Instead, it opens up to the user, allowing them to add their own story.

It responds to the needs of

The kitchen is a natural extension of the living area, although it has its own distinct character. Here, warm wooden fronts are juxtaposed with metallic surfaces and base units with a pronounced grain pattern. This almost graphic rhythm introduces dynamism into the interior, without taking away from its harmony. Above the table hangs a red Flowerpot lamp – the only strong colour accent in the entire flat, which breaks up the subdued palette in a very attractive way. The Bauhaus-inspired metal chairs introduce a touch of modernist note, balancing the softness of the other materials.

In the living room, it is the … the light! Seeped through the linen curtains, it spills over the interior evenly, without sharp contrasts. The walls have been left almost empty, allowing a single work of art to resonate more strongly, becoming a conscious rather than a decorative choice. The open bookcase allows for personal touches – books, memorabilia, photographs – but there is nothing too much here. Every object has its place and the space breathes. Setting up memorabilia and accessories allows you to quickly rearrange the interior.

Private area

The bedroom has been designed like a quiet sanctuary. Warm browns and greens create a peaceful rhythm, and the painting above the bed ties the whole together without dominating it. In the same space was a desk, designed to encourage concentration. A mirrored chest of drawers subtly separates the work zone from the rest zone, allowing for a smooth transition between the day’s modes.

The bathroom is the most intimate part of the flat. The tiles in the shower are a deep bottle green shade and have an irregular surface that reflects light beautifully. Juxtaposed with wood and brass details, they create an atmosphere reminiscent of a frame from an intimate hotel spa – muted, warm and conducive to pausing for a moment.

What does the future hold?

The entire space has been designed to mature with the owner. It is not an interior ‘done at once’, but a space to absorb experiences: travels, books, meetings, daily habits. The architect concludes: “The greatest success of the project is that the flat reflects the owner, not the studio. We see orderliness, elegance and attention to detail, but also a joy in daily rituals and a conscious, well-accented nonchalance.”

This sentence captures Matuszewski Studio’s philosophy well. The inspiration here is not trends or mood boards, but people – their passions, way of life, need for harmony and individual rhythm. The result is interiors that do not age with fashion, but endure, changing together with those who live in them.
