This flat in Zabrze proves that 58 square metres can be transformed into a space brimming with boldness, emotion and practical solutions. The flat’s design, inspired by the colours of Pedro Almodóvar’s world and the client’s favourite colours, shows that retaining the existing layout does not have to mean playing it safe. On the contrary – here, colour has become a tool for change, and a limited budget did not prevent the creation of an interior with a distinctive character.
Ola and Jarek, the flat’s owners, knew from the outset that they did not want a revolution in the functional layout. However, they were keen on greater comfort, energy and a space that would simply bring joy. The designers from ER DESIGN – Ewa Warot and Anna Rogowska – treated these expectations as a starting point for creating a design in which colour is not an accessory, but the undisputed star.
A living room full of emotion
The most intense colours appear right from the entrance – orange and blue draw the eye into the depths of the flat, appearing on the walls, ceiling, built-in units and accessories. In the living room, the designers had to work with the existing elements: a burgundy sofa, a navy blue armchair, wooden flooring and some of the lighting. Instead of hiding them, they decided to highlight them.
An extensive built-in unit in a slightly muted shade of orange was created across the entire wall behind the sofa and around the window and TV. This solution not only organises the space and adds storage, but also creates a pleasant reading area. Colour has become a tool for organising functions here – each one has been visually distinguished.
The dining area has remained more neutral. The wooden table and chairs echo the floor, and colour appears only in the accessories, making the space a calm link between the vibrant living room and the kitchen.
Film-inspired touches
In the kitchen, the designers opted for a calmer feel. Light grey furniture has been placed in the alcove, and the colour accent has been replaced by a black-and-white mosaic. The latter is a nod to the characteristic motifs from Almodóvar’s films. As a result, the kitchen has become a visual respite, without losing any of its distinctiveness.
The bedroom was intended to be a colourful space for the owners, one that would fill them with energy every morning. Muted shades of burgundy and blue were used here, surrounding the bed area and flowing from the wall to the ceiling. Geometric motifs add dynamism, whilst the extensive built-in furniture around the bed and at the entrance provides an impressive amount of storage space. Bookcases are concealed on both sides of the headboard – a detail that combines functionality with an invitation to read.
A bathroom for relaxation
After the intense colours of the living area, the bathroom offers a soothing respite. Navy blue and grey create a calm, harmonious space that balances the energy of the other rooms. This gives the whole flat a sense of cohesion – colour acts here as an emotional guide, leading from expression to tranquillity.
The ER DESIGN project shows that even a small flat can become a symbol of courage and joy. Colour builds the emotions, character and identity of this interior. For the owners, it has become a way to get their daily dose of positive energy.
