Interior metamorphosis of a historic villa near Poznań

On the outskirts of Poznań, in an old, historic villa, a metamorphosis has been carried out that transforms a former doctor’s surgery into a highly inspiring interior full of colour, harmony and artistic daring. The project, carried out by Marta Wróbel and Marta Kodrzycka from the studio GRUPA MALAGA, is based on a complete change of the functional layout – from the revitalisation of the space to the fine-tuning of the finest finishing details.

Already at the entrance, attention is drawn to the original wooden door with glazing in an intense blue shade, which consistently appears in subsequent rooms . A spacious, bright vestibule with a beautifully stylised floor, comfortable seating and symmetrically placed mirrors gives the interior an original atmosphere, where tradition meets modernity. The designers took care to preserve the original wooden woodwork and the ceiling and wall stucco, creating a unique combination.

‘Our work began with the design of a complete change of the functional layout and ended with the details of the interior finishing,’ the designers mention.

The ground floor of the villa is a space in which usable zones are seamlessly interwoven – from the large entrance hall, through the open kitchen, cosy living room and lively dining room, to the ‘green veranda’ which is an intimate enclave. In the living room, a light colour palette complemented by navy blue and shades of blue adds lightness and elegance to the interior. A large, deep corner sofa with accompanying armchair and coffee table creates the ideal conditions for relaxation, while a semi-circular wall of windows lets in plenty of natural light. The oval ceiling section, covered with a taut white membrane with a mirrored effect, is a fine accent that completes the whole.

In the dining room, the heart of the ground floor, one wall is decorated in a dominant deep navy blue, which contrasts beautifully with the reddish upholstered chairs surrounding the long table. A similar taut membrane is used on the ceiling, making the room appear more spacious and luminous. The traditional U-shaped kitchen with a central island is kept in tones of blue and broken white, thanks to graphically arranged, colourful tiles, and blends seamlessly with the rest of the villa. A compact kitchen worktop with chairs has been designed next to one of the windows for quick meals, while a large wooden sideboard with subtle glazing adds character to the space.

A unique design element is the aforementioned green veranda, which opens onto the dining area and provides a place of respite. The section is distinguished by lush vegetation, old furniture, armchairs upholstered in velvety green, a coffee table and a chaise longue. It is an area created for relaxation and a favourite resting point for the residents. The veranda provides direct access to the garden, enhancing the effect of closeness to nature.

Small yet striking details also appear in the guest toilet, where vibrant blue and rust colours, a graphic coral reef motif and a sculpture of a sea mermaid on the windowsill continue the concept of colour saturation throughout the house. On the first floor, reached by a preserved staircase decorated with a lion’s head, are the children’s rooms and the master bedroom with dressing room and luxurious bathroom, where stylistic consistency and attention to detail maintain the high quality of the design.

The metamorphosis of the villa near Poznań has breathed a new spirit into the old walls. Its arrangement is proof that combining the past with modern trends can create an interior full of life, elegance and originality. The project, which restores the building’s original residential function, at the same time becomes a unique space that meets the expectations of the most demanding investors and confirms that innovative design can refresh even the most historic buildings.
