A modern Research and Training Centre of the Regional Medical Chamber, designed by the Toprojekt office, has just opened in Gdansk. The facility was created in response to the need for ongoing training of doctors and the adaptation of didactic forms to dynamic changes in medical science. Its original form strongly relates to the architectural heritage of the city. The centre for the training of doctors has attracted a lot of interest through its unusual design.
The new medical training centre offers flexible spaces that can be adapted to different types of classes. Lectures, workshops, small-group exercises and multimedia presentations are all possible here. The classrooms have been designed modularly, so the layout can be quickly changed from one large space to six independent rooms. The building also makes it possible to hold conferences, banquets and exhibitions. An integral part of the establishment is a set of gardens. The open ones by the streets create a green backdrop, while the terraces by the halls and restaurant provide space for informal gatherings. The enclosed herb garden, on the other hand, refers to the tradition of the monastery’s viridarii. The greenery, an important element of the composition, fits in perfectly with the nature-filled character of the Aniołki district.

The architecture of the centre refers to local building traditions, characteristic of the area of the intersection of Dębinki, Orzeszkowa and Śniadeckich streets. The complex consists of two simple pavilions finished with flat ceramic tiles and bricks, which is also a conscious reference by the architects to the historical buildings of the oldest parts of Gdańsk. The buildings were made as massive reinforced concrete shells. The main hall uses a steel and concrete structure with trusses that conceal the installations and allow them to be easily handled. The ground floor is kept in an architectural concrete style, which allows for free arrangement and adaptation of the space to different training methods.

The main body of the centre was shaped as a free-standing pavilion with a clear axial composition. Large glazed areas have been used on the ground floor, giving it an open character and providing a visual link to the surrounding gardens. The hotel zone is placed above the transparent section and its simple form gives the impression of being suspended above the site. The rooms are arranged around an atrium with a composition of ornamental grasses that change according to the seasons. Each room has a balcony. A contrast to the larger block is provided by a smaller pavilion with a compact brick form enclosed by a perforated wall. The function of this building was changed during the construction phase. The fitness area originally envisaged here was moved underground and replaced by a club for doctors called the Aeropag. It became a space for meetings and the exchange of ideas between trainees and the local medical community.
The new centre in Gdansk perfectly meets the didactic needs of doctors from the Tricity and surrounding areas and creates a space to integrate their environment, fostering learning, the exchange of experience and the building of professional bonds.
