It has 46 sq m. Krakow architects’ flat

In one of Krakow’s new blocks of flats, the design couple from 032 Atelier created a space that is at once their home, their workplace and their studio’s showcase. On a mere 46 square metres, they had to accommodate everyday life, professional concentration and the ability to receive guests without sacrificing their own design language. The architects’ flat does not dazzle with its size, but rather with its consistency and subtle juxtaposition of materials.

The designers knew from the outset that the flat was to be comfortable, but would be rented out in the future. Therefore, they were looking for a balance between a clear authorial gesture and neutrality, allowing the next residents to add their own touches. An additional challenge was the budget and the need to include plenty of storage and a fully-fledged workspace – so that the space remained visually light and uncluttered.

The basis of the composition was a warm, sandy palette and a play of textures. All walls were covered with the decorative Kabric putty from Flugger, where two shades were mixed to achieve the perfect colour. The matte, slightly irregular surface introduces softness and naturalness while building up the impression of a handmade finish. This is complemented by a floor of warm wood-toned panels arranged in a herringbone pattern and a dark walnut kitchen, which tidies up the living area and adds depth.

The cabinetry – kitchen, hallway and bathroom – was made according to 032 Atelier’s original drawings. The tall kitchen conceals most of the storage, allowing the other rooms to breathe without heavy cabinets. In the bedroom, the designers introduced two walls with rounded corners, dividing the space into a night area and a small, intimate study. It’s a simple trick to tame the square footage and bring out additional function without feeling cramped.

Against a neutral background, the colours and art clearly stand out. In the living area, the focal point is a round table with a transparent navy blue top juxtaposed with maroon chairs. This duo sets the tone for the entire interior. Above the sofa hangs a maroon clay tile composition – the work of client 032 Atelier from an earlier project, which brings a craftsman’s honesty and personal context to the flat. The interior is built up by contrasts: a steel coffee table juxtaposed with a woven rug, a futuristic Juicy Salif next to clay crockery, chain furniture next to pieces from brands HAY or 101 Copenhagen.

The furnishings are a conscious mix – thoughtfully designed to create a cohesive, refined world on a limited budget. Authentic decorations and artisanal ceramics add character but do not dominate. The owners describe their flat as “not obvious at first contact, but enveloping”, and indeed: a warm base meets bold accents here, and functionality meets a soft, welcoming atmosphere.

The 032 Atelier project shows that even on 46 square metres, it is possible to create an interior that is ready for change – with a timeless base that will last for years and accessories that can be swapped out as life goes on. This is for those who are looking for a way to make a small space work for their needs without losing character and lightness.
