It has 64 sq m and is in Katowice. Flat with a neon sign

Its interior was designed by Natalia Gurak of n a n o v o. studio. The flat with a neon sign is 64 sq m and is located in the First District development in Katowice. The architect smuggled Mediterranean motifs into the interior, which correspond to the investor’s interests.

The interior design refers to the building in which the flat is located. This is Nowa Dzielnica, designed by Medusa Group. From the windows of the flat, you can see the Silesian Museum with its mine shaft, and it is close to the iconic Spodek or NOSPR. Modern solutions and materials have been blended into the space of the apartment, which were created especially for this interior. A silver wall and a curtain add to the character. The flat has another characteristic element – it has been decorated with the neon sign “Kato”.

The flat consists of a living room, kitchen with a separate kitchen island, bedroom, laundry room and bathroom. In order to adapt the interior to the needs, the existing functional layout has been completely changed.

We were aware that our client had bought a flat designed for a couple with a child. However, we changed the two small rooms into a spacious living room visible immediately after entering the flat. The small living room was changed into a bedroom located in the corner, away from the living area, and the open kitchenette into a semi-separated kitchen. We redesigned the extra toilet into a utility room with a laundry room,” explains Natalia Gurak.

The interior is dominated by a light colour scheme. Shades of beige are mixed here with natural wood. They form the background for contrasting blue and orange. Despite relaxation as the guiding function of the interior, it was also intended to be positively stimulating.

What was the biggest challenge? The architect admits that it took a lot of time to find products that fully matched the design vision.

In projects like this, we don’t use template solutions, but design them novo. Sometimes the simplest decorations turn out to be unaffordable, so we make them ourselves, such as the rock wall in the bedroom, the decoration behind the sofa, the silver lining or the curtains, ‘ adds the designer.

There are more original solutions. A lot of attention was paid to the installation of the heavy concrete worktop, which is 8 cm thick. The tabletop was cast several weeks before assembly and transported to Katowice. The specifics required accuracy to the nearest 1 mm. The worktop forms the workspace in the kitchen and is part of a two-storey island. The section on the living room side is higher, so that it somewhat obscures the kitchen area. Hockers from the Paged brand have been placed on this side. Chairs from the same manufacturer were placed at the table.

Finally, it is worth noting the light reflections appearing in the flat. They give the interior character. These include the neon reflected in the table top or the silver wall and the blue shine on the silver sofa cushions.
