They lived in Brighton for several years. Their new flat in Bydgoszcz is an example of an interior full of positive energy. Its design was prepared by Sylwia and marek from Pracownia Duży Pokój.
The owners of the flat are Magda and Artur. Their sunny nature influenced the interior design, which is an example of the use of joyful colour combinations and original furniture. The flat is located in a 1970s block of flats in the heart of Bydgoszcz. It is a beautiful street adorned with stately chestnut trees and charming townhouses.
Magda and Artur had a vision for the place where they would live. It was important to them to preserve the natural, original fabric of the place. As much as possible was to survive and as many things as possible were to be given a second life. It was decided to renovate the door joinery, order new skirting boards modelled on the original ones from a friendly carpenter from the Tuchola Forest. The walls were renovated only in a few places where it was necessary. The old armchairs, chairs and sofa were given new fabrics.
Our approach to the renovation was guided from the outset by a great respect for the place. I was more interested in adaptation than modernisation, in accepting the old, respecting what was found,” says Sylwia from the Large Room Studio.
The designers perfectly understood the idea behind the renovation, as they themselves live in the tenement and privately share a similar philosophy of renovating this type of space. The design process itself proceeded harmoniously and with great commitment on the part of the owner of the flat. Undoubtedly, Magda had a huge contribution to its final appearance.
Magda is an incredibly sensitive person, very talented and was one step away from studying interior design in the UK . Working with her was a big, positive surprise for us,” adds the designer.
The work started with an analysis of the functional layout. Apart from the bathroom, hallway and two dressing rooms, every room changed its function. The formerly small kitchen is now the owners’ son’s room, while the former living room was transformed into a spacious kitchen with dining area. The current living room formerly housed the owners’ bedroom with dressing rooms, and the current bedroom used to be the son’s room. The dressing rooms were left in their original location and the door to them was accentuated with a distinctive motif and colour.
In the design, it was important to create a large kitchen, with a sizable worktop. The kitchen with the dining area flows into the living room, so it was very important to focus on the uniqueness of this room. After a few colour tests of the kitchen building, the choice fell on a sunny shade of yellow. This colour determined the choice of the next colours.
The wallpaper on the ceiling is an interesting feature, also the coral ceiling in the hallway complements the previous design decisions. There are a lot of colour motifs in the interior, but put together, they go well together. The story of this project is crowned by a poster in the living room – it depicts the city of Brighton, to which the owners have a great fondness.
