It is made of wood. The 19th century railway station in Gąsocin will regain its lustre

The railway station in Gąsocin, built around 1877, will soon undergo a comprehensive modernisation that will restore it to its former glory and provide modern standards of passenger service. The Polish State Railways plans to announce a tender for the selection of a contractor for the construction work. The finished facility is scheduled to open at the end of 2027.

The building, built according to the repetitive designs of the former railway stations of the Vistula Railway, is wooden, two-storey with a single-storey main body and two single-storey extensions. The characteristic ornamentation of the walls and roof trusses and the stone foundation are reminiscent of Russian rural wooden architecture. Situated on the Warsaw-Gdańsk line, the station is part of the European TEN-T network and is served by trains of the Mazovia Railway running to Warsaw, Ciechanów, Mława and Działdów, among others. The station is currently out of use and in need of revitalisation.

Once the design work has been completed and the documentation has been accepted, the investor – PKP S.A. – will announce a tender for a redevelopment contractor. “We are consistently working to increase the quality of passenger service at PKP stations so that the travel experience, the customer experience, is the best possible regardless of whether they use the largest stations in the country or smaller facilities such as the one in Gąsocin. We try to tailor railway station investments as much as possible to the needs of both passengers and local communities, hence the importance of cooperation with local authorities, thanks to which stations can be better developed, given new functions which they did not have at the time they were built,” says Paweł Lisiewicz, member of the PKP S.A. Management Board.

The scope of work includes the demolition of much of the existing masonry and structural elements, with new foundations, ceilings and roof trusses to replace them. The facades will be reconstructed while retaining the original architectural details, and the main lobby will undergo conservation of the historic furnishings. All work has been agreed with the conservation officer so that the station retains its unique character.

After modernisation, the ground floor of the building will house a waiting room, public toilets and a ticket office with social facilities. The additional space, totalling approximately 190 square metres, will be transferred to the Sońsk municipality under an agreement with PKP S.A. and developed for social functions. As a result, the station will become a centre integrating services for travellers and residents.

The investment will ensure accessibility without architectural barriers. A ramp will be built in front of the main entrance, while inside there will be a lift, paths for the blind and visually impaired and specially adapted toilets. Electronic displays with timetables will be installed in the building, as well as security systems and ecological solutions – from modern monitoring and access control, to burglary and robbery alarms and a BMS system to optimise water, electricity and heat consumption.

This is how the building looked in 1940:

The square in front of the station will be revitalised. Parking spaces for cars and bicycles, elements of small architecture – shelters, benches, bins – and greenery planting have been designed.

The modernisation is financed from PKP S.A.’s own funds and its gross value is estimated at several million zlotys. MAPLE sp. z o.o. of Katowice was responsible for developing the design documentation and supervision. The selection of the general contractor and the exact amount of the contract will be known after the tender is settled. The detailed dates for the opening of the station to travellers will depend on the progress of the works, the commissioning of the installations and the technical acceptance and permit for use.
