The Metro Stage Theatre is being built at the M2 Bródno metro line station. The space is currently being adapted and will soon be ready to host performances. The theatre is scheduled to open in spring 2025.
It is likely to be the only such theatre in the world. The Metro Stage Theatre is being built on the initiative of the Slightly Cultural Foundation, which produces theatre productions. The theatre will operate at the end station of the M2 Bródno metro line. The unusual space will be a place where actors can rehearse and then stage performances. The location at the metro station is expected to make it easier and quicker for Varsovians to access the venue.
However, it will not be the kind of venue we know from traditional theatres. The Metro Stage is being built in a 200 square metre room. In addition to the stage and technical facilities, there will be 70 seats for the audience.
According to tvn24.pl, it will host performances for children, young people and adults. The place is to be vibrant, so it will not be profiled in a specific theatre genre. There will be a place open to various social initiatives, from the presentation of classic plays to alternative ones. Tickets are expected to cost around £50-70. There will also be cheaper and free tickets, depending on the type of event.
Importantly, the Metro Stage theatre is located on level -1 (metro trains run on level -2), so there is optimal acoustics inside, the room is well soundproofed.
This is not the only investment supporting culture in the Warsaw metro. Earlier, we wrote about the municipal library being built in the neighbouring station of the M2 metro line – Kondratowicza. The facility will be distinguished by its original design. However, its opening has been delayed due to the breach of contract with the contractor. We currently do not know the new opening date for the library. We have published visualisations of the site HERE.
