It was built by the fjord. A house that grows out of a harsh landscape

On the west coast of Norway, high above the fjord line, a residence designed by OFFICE INAINN has been built. Completed in April 2025, the building was erected 148 metres above sea level and is distinguished by the way it is inscribed into the steep, rocky slope. The design does not impose itself on its surroundings, but seeks to emphasise and continue them. From the outset, the architects were guided by the principle that nature should guide their actions, not the other way around. The house by the fjord tries to blend in with the raw nature as much as possible.

Designing in harmony with the environment

One of the key design decisions was to preserve the original character of the plot and not to level the ground. The 127sq m building consists of two staggered volumes that follow the natural slope of the hillside. As a result, the interiors have different levels and the layout of the space did not require additional structures or walls. The building gives the impression of growing out of the ground rather than being built on top of it, creating a feeling of unique harmony with its surroundings.

Path into the interior

The entrance to the house is via a narrow path running between the rocks and the building facade. This introduction flows naturally into the interior, where the central element is a high corridor with a linear character. The space eases the transition from the austere landscape to the cosy interior. The wooden walls filter the light, giving it colours that match the rhythm of the day and the variability of the Norwegian coast. Each room has a different view of the fjord, and the layout of the rooms takes into account both the trees growing nearby and the play of light on the hillside.

The house by the fjord and its nature

Local materials have been used in the design, or materials that could be considered native in texture and character. Their function is to emphasise the atmosphere of the place, not to dominate it. The architects were guided by the idea of continuing the landscape and avoiding adding new, alien elements. Simple and tactile matter brings a natural expression to the overall design, creating a sense of maximum cohesion.

Architecture as collaboration

The residence was created in close collaboration with the developer, who indicated from the outset the importance of his connection to the region. The common idea boiled down to a simple premise: let nature lead. This approach was reflected in every step of the realisation, from the concept to the finishing details.

OFFICE INAINN studio philosophy

OFFICE INAINN sees architecture as a process sensitive to context and strongly connected to Scandinavian philosophy. Projects are created at the interface of the relationship between man and landscape, culture and everyday life. The studio focuses on simplicity, functionality and sustainability, aiming to minimise interference with the environment and create spaces that are sustainable yet full of harmony.
