It was built in a former quarry. Dalhalla Amphitheatre is a unique place in every respect

Unique concert venues rarely combine history, culture and nature in the way that Dalhalla does. Located in a former limestone quarry in the Swedish village of Dalarna, this extraordinary outdoor amphitheatre has become one of the world’s most revered open-air theatres.

The modern history of Dalhalla began in the early 1990s when Margareta Dellerfors, a former opera singer, was looking for a suitable venue for summer festivals and found an abandoned quarry in the forest just outside the town of Rättvik in southern Sweden. The quarry’s unique shape and steep walls created ideal acoustic and visual conditions. A few years later, it was transformed into a unique open-air amphitheatre with a capacity of up to 4,000 people, allowing for a variety of events from operas to rock concerts.

Dalhalla

Dalhalla’s roots go back 380 million years, when a meteorite of enormous force fell on the area, forming the Siljan crater. The impact altered the geological structure of the region, creating a distinctive ring of sediments 50 km in diameter. The natural limestone deposits have been mined and used in the construction and agricultural industries over the years, and the quarry served as one of the main sources of this raw material in Rättvik before it was turned into a theatre.

What sets Dalhalla apart from other concert venues is its phenomenal acoustics. The steep walls of the quarry, the surrounding water and the natural terrain make the sound propagate in a clear and distinct way. As a result, both operatic arias and rock riffs sound perfect in Dalhalla, creating an unforgettable experience for the audience. In the evenings, Dalhalla transforms into a place full of magic. Subtle lighting accentuates the structure of the monumental cliffs and the calm surface of the water, creating an atmosphere of intimacy that gives the audience the opportunity to contemplate the shows on display.
