The call for entries for the prestigious James Dyson Award 2025 (James Dyson Award), aimed at engineering and design students and graduates, launched on 12 March 2025. This year’s edition takes place in up to 28 countries and regions, opening the door to innovators from around the world.
The competition allows the submission of projects that respond to everyday user needs or address the most pressing global challenges. Young creatives whose concepts can make a real difference to the quality of life are invited to participate.
Support for forward-looking inventions
Since the Awards’ inauguration in 2005, the James Dyson initiative has supported more than 400 projects from around the world with a total of £1 million. Finalists, selected by national expert committees, have the chance to win a local prize of £5,000, while the international winner receives up to £30,000 and the opportunity to showcase their project on the global stage.
James Dyson 2025 Award – examples of inspiring success stories
Previous editions of the Awards have featured a number of ground-breaking inventions. One of these was the mOm incubator, designed by James Roberts, a graduate of the UK’s Loughborough University. This lightweight, portable device, designed for developing countries, has saved the lives of more than 10,000 newborns around the world – including in war zones such as Ukraine.
Another example is the SoaPen – a colourful soap pen that teaches children about hand hygiene in a creative way. Developed by Parsons School of Design graduates Shubham Issar and Amanat Anand, the product was launched in the US after winning an award, and its popularity continues to grow.
Poland also has reason to be proud. SmartHEAL, an intelligent dressing for monitoring chronic wounds, won international recognition in the 2022 edition. The project, created by three graduates of the Warsaw University of Technology – Tomasz Raczyński, Piotr Walter and Dominik Baraniecki – allows for non-invasive diagnosis of inflammation by analysing the pH of the wound, without having to remove the dressing.
The inspiration and mission of James Dyson
Sir James Dyson, founder of Dyson and founder of the competition, emphasises that his aim from the start was to support young creatives:
“I created the James Dyson Award with the aim of inspiring and supporting the next generation of engineers and designers. Every year I see how powerful the ideas of young people who are passionate about solving the problems of today’s world are.”
James Dyson Prize 2025 – deadlines and recruitment details
Applications can be submitted until 16 July 2025 (midnight). Projects will be judged by a national jury of experts in the fields of design and engineering. Considerations will include the usefulness of the invention, its innovation, design process and commercial potential.
The national winners will be announced on 10 September, the list of 20 international finalists will be announced on 15 October and the global winners will be announced on 5 November 2025.
James Dyson Foundation – an investment in the future
The James Dyson Prize 2025 competition is part of the activities of the James Dyson Foundation, an international non-profit organisation founded in 2002. Its aim is to inspire young people into engineering and support medical research. The Foundation has so far donated more than £145 million to educational and charitable projects around the world.
