Japanese-inspired. Sensu tea room with minimalist decor

The Sensu Teahouse was established in the heart of the atmospheric Nový Žižkov in the Czech Republic. The building on the site of the former railway station combines history with modernity, and the dynamic surroundings give way to the tranquillity and harmony that this unique place offers. The interior of the premises was designed by architects from the Jiri Lukas Atelier studio.

The interior design of the Sensu teahouse is an example of how every inch of space can be transformed into a thoughtful story of passion and craftsmanship. The designers took care of every detail – from the ceiling to the walls to the floor. The concrete floor is no ordinary surface; the precisely placed expansion joints convey not only functionality but also an artistic form, highlighted by modern details such as the steel drip-edge. Such a meticulous approach to the work was further inspired by the developer, who personally travelled to Japan to make direct contact with local tea growers, giving each interior element an extra dimension of authenticity and quality.

Harmony of colours

The interior of the Sensu tea room is based on a muted colour palette, with natural earth colours dominating. Wood, linen, concrete and glass combine, and every element – from the velvety oak veneer to the shiny surfaces of stainless steel – works together to emphasise the expressive colours of the matcha and sweet treats. Combining the rawness of concrete with the softness of linen curtains or the elegance of glass creates a space where modernity meets tradition and aesthetics go hand in hand with functionality. Every detail has been carefully chosen to not only delight the eye, but also to awaken the senses, making the space welcoming and inspiring.

The focal point of the tea room is the long, linear bar, which becomes both the heart of the place and a key element in directing the movement of guests. Behind the bar counter is the array of professional equipment required to prepare the highest quality matcha. Working on the interior design, the architects designed some of the furniture themselves – from the round table with an impressive two-metre diameter, to the rectangular tables for four people, to the bar table placed at the entrance. These carefully designed elements not only facilitate daily service, but also emphasise the unique character of the interior, in which every detail has its place and function.

The atmosphere of Sensu’s tea room is also built up through the play of light and shadow. The raftered ceiling above the bar not only effectively deals with acoustic problems that could interfere with relaxation, but also gives the space depth and dynamism. Thanks to thoughtful lighting, deep shadows and subtle reflections highlight the textures of the materials, creating a cosy yet modern atmosphere. This combination of cleverly integrated technology and artistic vision makes the interior of the tea room a place where innovation and tradition coexist in perfect harmony.

The Sensu Teahouse is not only a space in which to savour the highest quality matcha – it is also a manifestation of passion, precision and a constant search for perfection. The investor, who was dedicated to travelling as far as Japan to learn the secrets of local tea traditions, put his heart and soul into every detail of the design. The result is a place where modern minimalism meets tradition, and every element of the interior – from the central bar to the unique family of furniture to the carefully selected materials – forms a coherent whole. Sensu has become a true oasis of calm, where everyone, regardless of the pace of city life, can rediscover the art of celebrating the moment.
